Now that my formerly helpless baby has become mobile, I am discovering just how difficult caring for both an active older child and a surprisingly speedy infant can be. While I am busy wiping spilled cornflakes up from under Zackary’s chair, my sweet baby is happily belly-crawling to the corner of the kitchen to look for small crumbs or pieces of lint to pop in his mouth. When I help Zack pull up his pants after a bathroom break, Benjamin takes advantage of the time alone and tries to swallow a sheet of newsprint.
With two busy children to care for, I need my essential products to be as user-friendly as possible. I don’t have time for fiddling with awkward features, because every second of wasted time is a second that one or both children will probably use to do something they shouldn’t. I’ve been lucky enough to test a few different cloth diapers in the past and have found things to love about all of them, but with Benjamin being so much more active, my needs are definitely changing. Quick and easy is the name of the game, and the iCandy diaper system by Urban Fluff looked like it fit the bill perfectly. I couldn’t wait to test this revolutionary new system for myself.
The iCandy system incorporates three separate elements into one remarkable cloth diaper. The iCandy wrapper is available in a huge variety of gorgeous designer prints for both boys and girls. The wipe-clean waterproof liner snaps into the wrapper and contains any mess so that the wrapper stays spotless. Finally, the triple layer soaker pad provides comfort and incredible absorbency.
I received my iCandy cloth diaper system in the Monkey Numbers Green print. The system comes in both an infant (birth-20 lbs) and toddler (15-35 lbs) size to ensure a proper fit with no leaking. I chose the toddler size for my 18 lb baby. The first thing I noticed about this diaper was how incredibly stylish it was. The adorable monkeys standing by bright colored numbers on a light green background was just stunning, and the rich brown chocolate color of the wrapper’s tabs coordinated perfectly with the pattern.
The iCandy wrapper also features a full row of snaps along the top of the wrapper, as well as multiple snaps on the crossover wrapper tabs to ensure that the diaper will fit perfectly and stay in place no matter how active baby gets. I loved how the ultra-adjustable snap closures let me fit the diaper perfectly around Benjamin’s waist.
The waterproof liner snaps into the wrapper with four quick snap closures, one in each corner of the diaper. I was happy to see the liner had soft micro-chamois binding on the elastic edges so that delicate skin wouldn’t be irritated. The liner featured elastic gussets around the legs, and also at the front and back of the diaper. I laid the quilted soaker pad on top of the liner and snapped the diaper onto Benjamin.
I left Benjamin in his iCandy diaper for about six hours the first time that he wore it, so I was thrilled to see that his clothing was still dry when I did change his diaper. Even more impressive, the soaker pad still felt quite dry too! I went back to the website and learned that this is one of the benefits of the microfleece top. It provides a stay-dry feel even when the inner layers of microterry are completely soaked. Of course, it also provided wonderful softness for Benjamin’s bottom.
The real genius of the iCandy system is that changing a wet diaper is as simple as pulling out the soaker pad, putting in a fresh one and snapping the diaper shut. It wasn’t hard to see that this quick-change method of cloth diapering would be a wonderful advantage to a busy mom such as myself!
When Benjamin soiled the diaper, the iCandy system had no problem containing the mess. I followed the website instructions and removed both the soaker pad and the snap-in liner when I changed him. As promised, the iCandy wrapper was still clean! By just snapping in another liner and adding another soaker pad, I could continue to use the same wrapper even after Benjamin had messed the diaper.
Every iCandy wrapper comes with one snap-in liner and one soaker pad. But because the wrappers are designed to stay clean so long, a minimum of four wrappers can effectively provide full-time cloth diapering. Extra snap-in liners and soaker pads are available separately and are recommended to get the most out of the iCandy cloth diapering system. The liners and soaker pads are also available in a range of fun and stylish colors to co-ordinate with the wrappers.
When I sit down to change Benjamin’s diaper, chances are good that I only have about a minute to do so. I love the quick and easy convenience of a system that lets me pull out a wet soaker pad and pop in a dry one in the blink of an eye. I am also a big fan of the adorably trendy diaper itself, especially now that summer has finally arrived. The iCandy wrapper is so cute that on warm days, I just add a t-shirt and let Benjamin show his diaper off to the world! Cloth diapering may not always be glamorous, but iCandy has done a perfect job of combining style with convenience to create a diapering system that any busy mom will love.
