As summer draws to a close and back-to-school sales abound, I find myself thinking about the garbage that will be created by the upcoming school year. Minimizing waste has always been something that I strive for in my household, and every parent knows that there is no bigger potential for waste than the school lunch. Plastic wrap for the sandwich, a ziplock bag to hold cookies, a disposable juice box…by the time a child finishes lunch, the table is covered with garbage! I definitely didn’t want to contribute to the “disposable lunch” trend, so I was delighted when I was given a chance to review the amazing Kids Konserve Waste-Free Lunch Kit from the green fundraising company, Koru Fundraising, a division of Koru Distribution.
This lunch kit is designed to be the ultimate complete waste-free kit. When it arrived, I pulled out the stylish recycled cotton bag with its unique butterfly print eagerly. The lunch bag contained a 500ml stainless steel water bottle, two stainless steel 8oz food containers, a reusable food cozy and a recycled cotton napkin. The water bottle and napkin were both printed with the original Kids Konserve butterfly as well to create a lunch kit that was as beautifully coordinated as it was eco-friendly.
Since I received the lunch kit before the school season began, my husband agreed to test the Waste-Free Lunch Kit for me over a one-month period. He immediately fell in love with the stainless steel bottle and its innovative BPA-free lid with a sturdy carabiner clip. The clip made grabbing the bottle out of the bag so easy! He pulled it out and filled it right away, and then popped it into the fridge so that it would be icy cold the next day.
Early the following morning, I pulled out the Kids Konserve kit and packed up my husband’s lunch. The reusable food cozy was sensational and so easy to use. The round circle of sturdy plastic had a Velcro closure on the outside to secure the contents. I placed my husband’s sandwich in the center of the circle, wrapped the plastic around it and secured the wrap with the long Velcro strip. The adjustability of the cozy meant that I could use it for everything from bagels to cookies.
I popped the sandwich into the sturdy cotton bag and grabbed the round food containers. These fantastic little snack containers are a best seller, and it didn’t take me long to find out why! The 8oz size is just perfect for holding a portion of crackers, vegetables or fruit, and the leak-proof lids help to keep the messiest snacks safely contained. I always rely heavily on fruits and vegetables in my lunch plans, so I filled one of the containers with baby carrots and the other with celery sticks.
I placed the snack containers and the water bottle in the lunch bag beside the sandwich before adding an apple, an orange and a banana. It was a full bag, but the Waste-Free Lunch Kit successfully held everything, and the napkin on top added the perfect touch! I sealed the bag with the long, thick strip of Velcro at the top of the bag, handed the lunch kit to my husband and eagerly awaited his return from work so that I could see what he had thought of the Kids Konserve Waste-Free Lunch Kit.
When my husband returned from work, he was completely enthused about how well the lunch kit had worked for him. The sandwich wrap had kept his sandwich safe and secure until lunchtime and the stainless steel water bottle had provided the perfect hydration. The 8oz snack containers were definitely the star of the lunch kit with their leak-proof lids that kept the veggies crisp and the lunch bag dry. Best of all, my husband’s lunch hadn’t created a single piece of garbage!
