Like so many people, my husband and I struggle with our weight at times. I am actually quite happy with my body and while I do have a little extra weight on my stomach and lower body at the moment, I am a pretty self-confident woman and there isn’t a person in the world that could convince me that I can’t successfully rock a party in a cute little dress.
My husband, on the other hand, had reached a point where his weight was actually scaring me a bit. He has a history of heart disease and diabetes in his family and the risk of both conditions is very much related to excessive weight. We had talked about trying some different diets on a few occasions, but when I got the chance to review TurboCharged by Dian Griesel, Ph.D. and Tom Griesel, I knew it was time to stop talking and start moving towards a healthier lifestyle.
I read through the book before changing my husband’s diet and exercise plan and I found it completely fascinating. So many of the concepts were ones I agreed with completely and others were ideas that had never occurred to me, yet made perfect sense. I loved that the book encouraged lifestyle changes like eating unlimited amounts of fruit, drinking a generous amount of water every day and doing plenty of walking.
There were also some lifestyle changes I was a little more hesitant about, such as eliminating all grains from the diet and rinsing with mouthwash before every meal. But my husband bravely leaped in and participated in a strict five days of the program followed by a combination of lenient and strict diet days over the next few weeks.
One of the things I loved about the program was that it really emphasized that the only kind of healthy weight loss was weight loss that resulted from losing body fat. So many people merely diet and think that because they’re losing weight, they’re healthier, but unless you’re also taking steps to ensure that you aren’t losing muscle mass or bone density, your diet could actually be making you less healthy. (Incidentally, this is the reason that so many people immediately regain their weight when they stop dieting.)
The other thing I loved was the fact that the system works fast. After two weeks following the TurboCharged plan, my husband had dropped from 238 pounds and 35% body fat to 210 pounds and 26% body fat. Because the program essentially “teaches” your body to burn body fat for energy instead of sugar, the fat almost seems to melt away after the first few days.
With weddings, vacations and other summer activities, my husband has essentially taken a break from the TurboCharged plan for the time being. His eventual goal, which is also the ideal weight recommended for him on the TurboCharged website, is 190 lbs. Even though he’s still 20 lbs. away from his goal, he hasn’t put on a single pound of the weight that he’s lost and he has maintained some of the good habits he gained following the TurboCharged plan (like eating lots of fruit and drinking lots of water).
When the busy summer season winds down, I know Curtis will happily start up on the TurboCharged plan once again and I’m sure he will have no problem reaching his goal of 190 lbs.
