When I’m looking for a fun family activity, there’s nothing I love more than a fun family movie. The newest animated hit from Paramount, Rango, was released on Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Pack on July 15, 2011, and it sounded like an absolutely hilarious choice for a family movie night. I was lucky enough to get the chance to review it for myself and I couldn’t wait. Here’s a brief synopsis:
Get ready to tango with Rango, a winner with critics and audiences that’s “like nothing you’ve ever seen before” (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone). Johnny Depp is spectacular as Rango, a kooky pet chameleon who gets tossed into a wild and raucous town in desperate need of a hero. Refreshingly original with eye-popping animation, Rango is “loads of fun and genuinely funny” (Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times). And now you can get more Rango in the Blu-ray + DVD Combo Pack with Digital Copy featuring the never-before-seen ending, 10 deleted scenes and exclusive interactive Blu-ray features including picture-in-picture storyboards and an interactive field trip to Dirt, and so much more.
Of course, one of the things that immediately appealed to me about this movie was the fact that the fabulous Johnny Depp provides the voice of Rango. Like one or two other women in the world, I’m a big fan of Johnny Depp and even though he plays an animated chameleon in Rango, I was still excited to watch the movie and see what he did with the role.
The movie was even better than I had expected and such is the brilliance of Johnny Depp that he can make even a pet chameleon stranded in a desert town into an incredibly cool character. While the bumbling and surprisingly lucky Rango is more actor than hero, he manages to give the thirsty townspeople something that they’ve needed for a very long time…hope.
Unfortunately, when Rango’s search for the town’s missing water leads him a little too close to the truth, he is forced to admit that he is a fraud and leave the town in disgrace. But just when all seems lost, Rango finds something even more important than the water, namely, himself. And his new knowledge may be just what he needs to free the town once and for all!
This movie was beautiful, hilarious, exciting and moving all at once and I loved every minute of it. It was a little bit complex for Zackary and since some of the animals do actually die and there is a bit of mild language, I would say the movie is a better choice for older children and teens rather than for younger kids.
My husband and my thirteen-year-old sister both loved Rango every bit as much as I did and the animation really is amazing. If you’re looking for a great new movie to enjoy this summer, check out Rango and see just how entertaining an animated western starring a domestic chameleon can be!
