My newest discovery in the world of Canadian children’s music is a group that immediately brought a smile to my face because they’re not just a band…they’re a family. And what could be more appropriate than for a family to create music that families everywhere can enjoy? That’s why I was thrilled when vogelJoy gave me the chance to review their children’s CD of energetic, family-friendly music entitled We Have a Band.
VogelJoy consists of mother Kim, father Terry and their three children singing, dancing and playing both classic folk songs like Jenny Jenkins and original modern songs such as their newest title Missing in the Corn Maze. My boys and I decided to listen to the We Have a Band CD one afternoon when we were looking for some fun kid-friendly music.
We Have a Band has a strong folksong feel to it, with some traditional jazz influences as well. My boys and I were both intrigued by the multi-media aspect of the CD. In addition to a variety of classic and modern children’s music, there were also many great children’s poems interspaced with the music. I loved the idea of combining music and poetry in this way; it really made the CD engaging and added a little something special to the listening experience.
I also loved some of the classic folk songs that were featured in We Have a Band. My personal favourite was There’s a Hole in the Bottom of the Sea. Hearing this song immediately transported me back to my childhood days of singing songs around a fire at summer camp. My husband was equally thrilled to hear Sur le Pont d’Avignon; being born and raised in Quebec, classic French folk songs like this one are so enjoyable for him.
VogelJoy also has a sensational website featuring free downloads of some of their songs, children’s activities, information about upcoming shows and much more! Zackary was delighted when he found a read-along story of The Musicians of Bremen in the site’s Kid Zone. He adores this story and had a great time listening to the vogelJoy version on the website. My own personal favourite feature of the website was the fact that I could listen to some of the vogelJoy tracks as I read through the homepage, including the family’s newest song Missing in the Corn Maze!
Overall, the mix of music on vogelJoy We Have a Band was something that my husband, my boys and I all enjoyed. The music was catchy, the lyrics were easy to follow and the tunes were memorable without the excessive repetitiveness that can make some children’s music a little tiresome for parents. VogelJoy had a sound that my whole family enjoyed, and my boys loved the fact that there were kids “just like them” singing on the CD.
