One of the things I love about the VeggieTales series is the way that it so often takes a classic story and gives it a fun new twist that can both teach an important lesson and entertain children. The newest DVD release from VeggieTales, a twist on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s A Little Princess, is a perfect example, and I was so excited to see what the boys would think of VeggieTales: The Penniless Princess. Here’s a brief synopsis:
Sweet Sara Crewe has everything a little girl could want – a loving family, lots of friends and a closet full of frilly dresses! But when life takes a turn and Sara goes from riches to rags, will she realize that her true worth lies not in what she has, but what’s in her heart? Find out in this inspiring new story from VeggieTales, based on the beloved classic novel A Little Princess, that reminds kids who they are in God’s eyes.
I was curious to see how my boys would like this DVD because while they love VeggieTales, they are also at that “boy-power” stage that has them shunning any book, movie or television show that seems too feminine. But despite the fact that the star of this DVD was little Sara Crewe, both boys were soon absorbed in the story. And Zackary, when the DVD had ended, came up to me and announced, “I liked that, Mom! The girl didn’t have anything and she was so sad, but two nice boys made her room into a home!”
As they usually do, my boys wanted to watch the DVD again as soon as it had ended so the second time I sat down to watch it with them. A Little Princess is one of my very favourite children’s books and I have to admit that I couldn’t wait to watch the way that the VeggieTales characters performed the story. It was just as touching as the book and I couldn’t help but tear up when Sara was saved from her fate as a servant and had the chance to spread her timeless wisdom to her former headmistress.
