It takes a lot for a TV show to impress me. I tend to have a want-it-all attitude when I watch any show; I want to laugh, I want to be touched, I want to connect emotionally with the characters…needless to say, there aren’t many programs that can manage to satisfy my desires! But CBC’s new series This Life has had me hooked since the very first episode, and I know I’m not alone.
The series follows the story of Natalie, a single mother whose terminal cancer diagnosis turns her family’s lives upside down. While her journey and struggle are the focus of the series, the adventures of her siblings, parents and teenage children all provide their own substance and development to the story. It’s impossible to watch an episode and not feel your heart aching for the characters, even as you’re sometimes laughing along too.
The season has just two episodes left and to celebrate the upcoming finale, I’ll be hosting a #ThisLifeCBC Twitter chat during the next episode! Come join in the fun on December 7 at 9pm EST and live tweet as you watch Natalie and her family’s latest experiences and prepare for the conclusion of the season! There’s no RSVP required and plenty of great conversation in store, so mark your calendar and great ready to watch and tweet along! Best of all, I’ll be surprising two random chat participants with a $50 gift card at the end of the hour!
I think that personally, the reason this series has resonated with me so much is because I can identify with so many of the characters. Having been a “Maggie” in my youth and a “Natalie” as a mother, I know all too well the joys and the trials of being both a free spirit and a devoted parent. And seeing the many imperfections of Natalie’s siblings and parents, and the closeness they all share despite them, reminds me of my own family and the closeness we’ve shared through our own challenges. If you haven’t watched This Life yet, now is the time to get caught up. Then come join in the Twitter chat and share your thoughts on the second-last episode and the upcoming finale!
