Preparing Family for Winter Cold and Flus

My mother always told me that I was a very healthy child overall but when I did get sick, I REALLY got sick. I remember some of my worst illnesses from my youth and my mom remembers even more, including an occasion when I had to be rushed to the hospital because I suddenly and inexplicably started convulsing on the floor. The doctors couldn’t explain the cause and it never happened again, but I can only imagine how terrifying that day must have been for my mom.

Now that I’m a parent myself, I’m happy to see that my own boys seem to have taken after me with regards to illnesses. Neither gets sick very often and sometimes we even manage to make it through an entire blustery Saskatchewan winter without so much as a cough or a sniffle. But when my boys do feel under the weather, I’m always ready to help them feel better as best I can!

Personally, I’ve found that having Children’s TYLENOL® and Children’s MOTRIN® in the house is one of the simplest ways to ensure I’m ready to help my boys feel better. Just last winter, Benjamin woke up in the middle of the night hallucinating with a high fever, though he’d gone to sleep feeling fine. He was almost in tears thinking that there were mean people in his room, and my heart hurt for my poor, confused boy. I gave him a dose of Children’s TYLENOL® to bring down the fever and soon his forehead was cool and he was sleeping peacefully once more.

Just like my own mother, I tend to turn to Children’s TYLENOL® when a fever is preventing my boys from resting so they can beat the cough or flu they’re battling. But I also like having Children’s MOTRIN® in my medicine cupboard, since it provides up to eight hours of pain and fever relief. I tend to use regular MOTRIN® for occasional pain relief from headaches or body pain, and I always get long-lasting and reliable relief from my discomfort. So, when my boys are in pain, I reach for Children’s MOTRIN®. Being in pain is never fun and it can be especially hard for a child. Up to eight hours of relief means that Zackary and Benjamin will essentially be able to get through a full day comfortably.

For Zackary, Children’s MOTRIN® worked great in bringing down the pain and swelling in his arm after he broke his wrist last fall. I’ve never broken a bone before, so I knew nothing about cast care or treatment until my son’s fall on the playground. I learned once the cast was in place that I needed to watch his arm and make sure his hand wasn’t swelling due to the cast being too tight. A dose of Children’s MOTRIN® helped to relieve the pain of Zackary’s broken wrist, making the cast more comfortable. And the long-lasting relief meant that my poor son could still get a good night’s sleep in the first few days after the break so his body could start the healing process.

(Handy hint: My pharmacist always told me to try and dose by weight if possible. When weight isn’t clear or well known you can dose by age.)

Over the years, I’ve developed a number of favourite treatments when my boys aren’t feeling their best. Hot water with fresh lemon juice and local honey is my go-to choice for soothing sore throats, and my boys love the flavour of the drink. An afternoon nap wrapped up in a cozy blanket on the couch works wonders for helping my boys regain their usual energy during a cold. And for more minor ailments, sometimes just getting out of the house and enjoying some light activity helps put the boys’ illness out of their minds. But no matter what pain, illness or discomfort my boys are facing, having Children’s TYLENOL® and Children’s MOTRIN® on hand means I’m ready to help them handle the pain and fever that illness and injury often bring. And when my boys are more comfortable, that means I am too!

  1. I love the 8 hour Motrin. I nice to feel like I am not feeding them medicine all the time and they feel great for most of the day.
