Fisher-Price Favourites are Toys Parents and Children Will Both Love #FPFavourites

fisher-price favourites logoTo me, one of the clearest signs of a great company is that it offers products that have been used and loved for generations. My very first toy, bought for me by my mother a month before I was even born, was a Fisher-Price Happy Apple and that toy was passed down through every other child in our family and then on to my oldest son. A toy like that is impressive not just because of its durability, but even more so because it has appeal that has proven itself to be timeless.

Recently, Fisher-Price has released a list of twelve Fisher-Price Favourites, gear and toys that have withstood the test of time with proven universal appeal, and as soon as I looked through the list, I could see why the items had been chosen. Take the Discover ‘n Grow Jumparoo, for instance. My first experience with this activity-filled bouncing chair was when my oldest son was less than a year old. I comment often on the high energy levels of my boys and that was true even when they were infants. Zackary absolutely adored his Jumparoo and would bounce in it so energetically that sometimes I expected to see it leave the ground! In fact, he loved it so much that I sometimes let him eat his meals in it to keep him happy.

Life Coach Caird Urquhart Shares Five Tips To Keep Your Kids Out of Her Office When They’re in Their Twenties

I had the pleasure of meeting life coach Caird Urquhart at a press event last October and I was very impressed by her down-to-earth approach to life, work and family. We chatted recently and she very generously agreed to share her knowledge with Mommy Kat and Kids readers through this fabulous article. We all want our children to grow up to be confident, independent adults. Here are Caird’s top five tips for making that happen!

1. Be a mother not a friend

Too often I see parents bend over backwards to be “liked” by their children. Let’s not confuse like with love. To be a loving parent doesn’t always mean you need to be liked. I remember when I was little I had a friend whose mom would let us do whatever we wanted. We even got to draw on the walls in one room in their house. At that time I thought how lucky she was to have such a cool mom. Fast forward ten years. I ran into her one night at a then common teenage hangout and found out she was living in a home for wayward youth. That was the first time I was glad my mother hadn’t been my friend growing up. The kicker for me on this subject came more recently when I was discussing with someone whether they should buy alcohol for their 17-year-old daughter. She wanted to take something to a party she was going to. Since when did being a parent equate with dropping off little brown bags to your kids? I’m no prude but I draw the line on breaking the law as a way to win over your child’s affection. [Read more...]

Helping Your Child Discover the Basics of Money Management

It doesn’t take long for your little ones to realize that the green paper in your wallet has a special ability to get them things. Before long, they start wondering what it is and how it works. If you want to help your kid out in a big way, teaching them the basics of how to manage money at an early age is critical. Here are a few tips to try out when you want to help your child in this area.

sheep bank1. Let Them Earn It

From an early age, you should associate money with doing something to earn it. Let your children do odd jobs around the house to earn $.50 or $1. Once they get older, you could let them mow the neighbours’ yard or do other miscellaneous jobs. You don’t have to just let them trade work for money either. For example, you might want to let them set up a lemonade stand or sell something else. Help them foster the spirit of being an entrepreneur as much as possible.

2. Encourage Them to Give Back

One of the most important lessons that most people learn is to give some of their money back to charity. Whether that’s giving money to a local church or giving it to a special cause, it can make a big difference for those who need it. Show your child how to take a percentage of each paycheck and give it to a charity. This will not only help them make a difference now, but it will also give them some nice tax breaks in the future. Top Three Must-Have Products for Surviving Baby’s First Year

Becoming a mom is such a monumental moment and while the first year with a new baby is full of love and laughter, it can also be a little overwhelming. Babies grow and change so quickly that a mom can feel like there’s always something new she needs for her little one. Some baby gear is more of a luxury than a necessity, but to make caring for your precious bundle of joy a little easier, there are some baby must-haves that can help!

A good stroller is always a top priority in my mind. Walking is one of the very best ways to get back in shape after giving birth and having a high-quality stroller will make a new mom more likely to head out on an adventure. I love the Britax B-Agile stroller because it’s lightweight, easy to manoeuvre and good for both smooth and bumpy terrain. [Read more...]

Being a Mom with Cool Factor Takes Personality

Becoming a mom is a life-changing event. It’s the moment which the bulk of a woman’s attention moves from herself to her child forever. While it’s incredibly easy to get completely caught up in the joys (and trials) of raising children, it’s so important for us women to remember that we need time to celebrate our own style and personality, too. Becoming a mom doesn’t have to mean baggy jeans and minivans.

I take pride in being a trendy parent and I’ve learned over the years that maintaining my cool as a mom doesn’t have to be hard. For me, it starts with clothes. I’ve always been a big fan of seasonal wardrobe purging. About twice a year I go through every item in my closet and get rid of clothes that don’t fit, that I don’t wear or that don’t suit my current style. To keep my cool factor, I finish off that purge by updating my look with trendy new pieces. There’s no need for a whole new wardrobe; hot red heels with snakeskin accents and a cute new top in a fresh spring print can give a whole closet an updated feel.

Three Easy Ways to Take Time For Yourself

One of the biggest challenges as a parent is finding moments for “me” time. Some parents feel that there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to take time for personal indulgences and some even feel guilty about spending time enjoying themselves instead of caring for their family. But taking that time out for you is important. So how can you add “me” time to your busy schedule? It doesn’t have to be difficult!

cappuccinoStay In – One of the easiest ways to enjoy some relaxing grown-up fun is to do something at home in the late evening hours after kids are in bed. Invite one or two friends over for snacks, drinks and great conversation or just cuddle up with your spouse to enjoy a board game or your favourite online game at partybingo.com. It’s a great way to reconnect with the people you care about! [Read more...]

A Time to Reflect a Time to Prepare

With the holiday season coming down upon us, we consider this time of year as a time to reflect on all of our experiences – both good and bad – from 2012. Some of us will have experienced new additions to the family, or get to support extended and surrogate families with their coming little miracles. The holidays have a way to show us all the light, as we make unwavering vows to protect our new little ones no matter the cost.

mWkffXiOne of the ways we can fulfill that promise is to take precautions to protect the health of our little ones, which extends beyond finding a trustworthy pediatrician. Doctors are increasingly recommending that their pregnant patients consider using a cord blood bank, a place that can store a baby’s cord blood and has the potential to improve the health of little ones at any point in their lives.

Cord blood is the blood leftover in the umbilical cord following the birth of a baby. It was once considered afterbirth to be thrown away but medical research discovered that cord blood is actually a rich source of stem cells. These cord blood stem cells have the ability to develop into disease fighting immune cells if properly stored, or banked post-birth. [Read more...]
