The Overwhelming Experience of BlogWest 2013

I always seem to have a hard time writing about my experiences at blog conferences, but it’s not because I have nothing to say. To the contrary, it’s because I learn so much that I have trouble narrowing down exactly what I want to share. And at no conference do I have a harder time with that than BlogWest. I’ve attended BlogWest 2012 as a panellist and BlogWest 2013 as a speaker and conference ambassador and both times the sheer volume of knowledge I gained left me overwhelmed for weeks afterwards.

There were a few key learning moments from the conference that really started to stand out to me over the last couple of weeks, though. These were my top three BlogWest 2013 takeaways:

For the Love of the Blog

The reasons we start are always different. We miss adult companionship after the birth of a child. We have a desire to connect with family in faraway places. We have friends that have turned a small piece of the Internet into a lucrative business. There are all kinds of factors that drive us.

Until one day we sit down at the computer and start a website.

The reasons are different but underneath those reasons, the motivation is the same. We have a need to create and it is a need that the Internet fulfils.

And that simple decision launches something that soon becomes bigger than we could possibly have imagined.

Come Join Me at the Western Canada Blog Conference-BlogWest 2013-Giveaway

As a Western Canadian blogger, I sometimes feel like I miss out on a lot of great events that seem to inevitably be held in the Toronto area. As much as I would love to attend all of them, the planning and expense involved make attending a Toronto event a rare experience for me. That’s why I was so excited last year when BlogWest, the premiere Western Canada blogging conference, was announced.

Of course I had to attend, and I was honoured to have the chance to speak on the monetization panel at the conference as well. BlogWest 2012 was educational, informative and a great way to connect with so many incredible Western Canadian bloggers. So when the BlogWest 2013 Ambassador Program was announced, I couldn’t wait to apply. I was so excited when I was chosen as the very first BlogWest 2013 Conference Ambassador.

You’re Contagious, Make It Count!

For the most part, bloggers are incredibly supportive of one another and I’m so glad to be a part of the Canadian blogging community. But every once in a while, a blogger will attack her peers because she feels that they’re not acting in the “right” way.

It hurts me when I see things like this, but as I thought about events like these, I realized that they are by no means limited to the blogosphere. High school is what will spring to many minds when public humiliations of this sort are discussed but even in adult relationships, humans often have the need to criticize and judge each other. It can be subtle: the mom on the playground commenting that SHE would never let her child eat a pre-packaged snack like the one you just handed your child. Or it can be more obvious, especially online: a hateful comment that visiting a fast-food restaurant on your vacation has doomed your children to a life of bad health and obesity.
