Listen to the Birds: An Introduction to Classical Music Storybook and CD Set Increases Musical Appreciation-Giveaway

secret mountain listen to the birdsAs a mother that is passionate about the importance of both books and music, I was an immediate fan of the storybook and music CD sets from The Secret Mountain. I reviewed a few of the innovative sets on my site in the past but the new release, Listen to the Birds: An Introduction to Classical Music, promised to be one that I would especially enjoy.

I love classical music and when Zackary was a baby I often used to put on some of my favourite tracks for the two of us to enjoy. While the boys have amassed a large collection of kids’ music, I love to take them outside of their comfort zone with more unexpected music choices. Listen to the Birds promised to do just that with various classical music tracks and stories about the birds that inspired the melodies. [Read more...]

Build Strong Literacy Skills with Books and Resources from Newmark Learning-Giveaway

I am a huge advocate for literacy and because of that, I’ve always looked for the best ways to help my boys develop strong reading skills. From alphabet flash cards to sight word activity sheets, I choose games and activities that combine fun and learning whenever I get the chance. So when I heard about Newmark Learning and its extensive line of books and other educational resources, I was excited to learn more about the company’s products.

I was given the chance to review an assortment of products, so I requested reading, math, science and social studies books at the Grade 1-2 level, Zackary’s current reading level at the time. The books were full colour and very appealing to both of my boys, but I really wanted to see how Zackary liked the content.

Insight Editions The Essential Supernatural is a Must-Have Book for Fans of the Series

I don’t watch very much television but there are one or two series that I absolutely love and one of my very favourites is Supernatural. Watching Sam and Dean Winchester battle ghosts, demons and monsters in their never-ending quest to save the world is my guilty pleasure and one I’ve been enjoying for over five years now. Recently I received a press release about a new book from Insight Editions called The Essential Supernatural: On the Road with Sam and Dean Winchester and I knew at a glance that I wanted that book.

essential supernatural bookInsight Editions very kindly sent me the book to review and I was so excited to flip through it and see what it was like. Within a few pages, I was captivated. This book is so much more than just a recounting of the last seven seasons of my favourite television show. With recaps of each season, character profiles and behind-the-scenes information about the making of the show, it has all kinds of little goodies that fans can recognize and appreciate.

While the gorgeous full colour pages of the book were appealing on their own, it was the multimedia layout of the book that was especially intriguing to me. From a hunter’s manual sewn into the center binding to documents tucked into an envelope at the back of the book to the classic pine tree air freshener that is always hanging from the mirror of the Winchester brothers’ beloved Impala, the fact that the book went beyond text made it all the more enjoyable to read. I found the section of the book dealing on the graphic art of the show to be especially interesting, so having little extras like stickers and postcards featuring some of the specially-created brands and settings from the series was so cool. Seek and Find Gets Personalized with Find Me If You Can Books from Bammco-Giveaway

My boys love seek and find books but while Zackary, at six years of age, is quite talented at finding tiny characters in a busy, jumbled picture, Benjamin, at three, often gets frustrated after a few minutes. Of course, he insists on searching anyways because if his big brother is doing something, then he wants to do it too!

find me if you can book bammcoI really wanted to find a way for both of my boys to enjoy seek and find books so I was thrilled when I was given a chance to review a Find Me If You Can book from Bammco. These innovative 30-page books take the traditional idea of seek and find and turn it into something completely unique by using a picture of your child’s face in the images! My son was so excited to receive his very own “Where’s Benjamin” book and he couldn’t wait to look through it. [Read more...]

Entertain Your Kids with the Where’s Waldo: Santa Spectacular Activity Book-Giveaway

When winter break boredom strikes, it can be hard to find entertaining activities for my boys that don’t involve a screen. But neither one of my boys can say no to a good book and both of them love fun activities. So I was thrilled when I got the chance to review Where’s Waldo: Santa Spectacular, a fun activity book featuring everyone’s favourite hard-to-find friend, Waldo.

Packed full of fun activities ranging from puzzles to word searches, there’s a lot more than seek and find adventure inside! I loved the fact that the book also contained hundreds of stickers so that kids could create their own Where’s Waldo scenes.

Zackary is a big fan of Where’s Waldo books so I knew he would love this book, that combined some of his favourite activities with one of his favourite book characters. At six-years-old, he was just the right age for this fun-filled book and like almost all kids, he always loves a book that includes stickers! [Read more...]

Fall Picture Books from Scholastic Make Reading Fun for Everyone

One of my favourite things about public school is Scholastic book orders. I used to love looking through the flyers when I was a child and now every month Zackary brings home a book order that the two of us can peruse together. I have to admit, I sometimes will even buy a book for myself after choosing books for him!

This fall, Scholastic Canada has some great fun book choices for younger children and I was so excited when we received three of the new fall pictures books from Scholastic to review.

the-very-hungry-bear coverAs soon as I saw The Very Hungry Bear, the newest picture book from Nick Bland, I knew we would be reading that one first. My boys love his previous books and so we sat down together to check out the new story. The tale of a hungry bear that went fishing and found a lost polar bear was so much fun and both the boys enjoyed it. And I appreciated the theme the story had of helping those in need, even if it means going without something yourself! [Read more...]

Summer Reading is Fun with Scholastic Canada

One of the ways that I keep my boys busy during the summer is with books and this year Scholastic Canada has some great choices for preschoolers and young school-age children. I received Some Dads and Zoe Gets Ready to review recently and my boys and I sat down to read them together.

some dads cover artSince Father’s Day had just passed, we decided to read Some Dads by Nick Bland first. This simple rhyming picture book has fun illustrations of animal dads and their children. From sporty dads to loud dads, every child is sure to find a dad described in the book that reminds them of their own father. My boys loved the pictures and especially enjoyed the “naughty dad,” who thought it was okay to throw water balloons in the house! [Read more...]

Heather Hartt-Sussman Picture Books Entertain and Teach Children About Their Feelings

My boys are big book lovers and so I appreciate it when I discover a picture book that helps my boys learn some valuable life lessons as well as entertaining them. The picture books from Heather Hartt-Sussman sounded like just the type of books I love and I was delighted when I received Nana’s Getting Married and Here Comes Hortense! to enjoy with my sons.

nana's getting married cover artWe read Nana’s Getting Married Gets first. This book tells the story of Nana, the best grandmother in the whole world. Until she gets a new boyfriend named Bob, that is! Suddenly, instead of baking cookies and knitting sweaters for her adorable grandson, she’s putting on makeup and singing love songs!

My boys especially loved hearing about the ways that the poor little boy tried to get rid of Bob. From pretending to be a ghost to running away from home to sharing all the intimate details of Nana’s health problems with Bob, he had plenty of creativity when it came to getting things back to normal. But in the end, he realized that Nana and Bob really are happy and that they both want to spend time with him. This book really emphasised the idea that change, while scary, can bring lots of wonderful things. [Read more...]
