Bottle-feeding my baby is not my first choice, but for a lot of women it may be their only option or a necessary compliment to breastfeeding at times. In any case, every mother wants to know that her bottles and sterilization methods are going to be safe for her baby. As a working mother I know that my newborn baby will need to be fed by bottle when I am not there and I want to have the peace of mind that my absence is not going to compromise her health. For these reasons I was pleased with the opportunity to try out a set of bottles and the new SmartSteam Microwave Sterilizer courtesy of Playtex.

I didn’t give much thought to the world of baby bottles with my past two children and generally just chose the cutest looking ones on the shelf. Then along came worries about BPA which suddenly meant I had to critically evaluate my choices from a totally different perspective. Thankfully, Playtex makes choosing a safe bottle simple by ensuring all it bottles are BPA-free. The company sent me two different types of bottles, the Nurser with drop in liners and the Ventaire, to test.

Philips AVENT Natural Drinking Cup Helps Your Child Go From Baby to Big Kid-Giveaway

My son is at the age where he is supposed to start learning how to use a cup and I have to say, it has been a struggle. After several sippy cups and some very wet floors (and a very wet baby), I got the Philips AVENT Natural Drinking Cup to test out. Immediately it scored major “Dad Points;” when Chase’s father looked at it for the first time he said, “That is very cool, let’s try it right now!”

So we did and I had to agree, it’s a very genius idea indeed. The first thing to note is the innovative 360° drinking, which I love for my baby especially. Chase tends to think he can drink from any side of his cups or bottles and he gets frustrated when he tries to drink from a random point on the cup and nothing comes out. Now, as long as his Philips AVENT Natural Drinking Cup is facing upright, he can get a drink.

The top is designed with a valve that only allows liquid to escape at the point where it is being pushed down with your baby’s lip, which means the only water that comes out goes straight into your toddler’s mouth. However I must say that the main reason I love them is because by nature I am a forgetful, sometimes lazy person. I mean… busy. Let’s say I’m busy! I hate having to sanitize bottles and to be honest, it’s done a lot less than it should be because of that. But with the MAM bottles there is no reason to procrastinate. Sanitizing is as easy as it’s going to get; put an ounce of water into the base of the bottle, set the nipple and top bottle component onto the base, screw the bottle on, set the lid on top, and toss into the microwave for 3 minutes. No pots of boiling water that has to be watched, which is perfect for me since I have a bad habit of getting distracted and forgetting about the pot until after the water has boiled away. So for us “busy” moms, put some water in the bottom, put it in the microwave, and forget about it until you need it! The easy sterilizing is definitely my favorite feature. [Read more...]
