The Backyardigans: Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens Live Show-Review

On Thursday, my entire family was given the chance to review The Backyardigans: Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens live show in Regina courtesy of Koba Entertainment. I was so excited to see how my boys would react to seeing their Backyardigans friends in real life! Here’s a brief synopsis of the show:

The Backyardigans gang – Pablo the penguin, Tyrone the moose, Uniqua the purple-spotted creature, Tasha the hippo and Austin the kangaroo – are five high-spirited preschool friends whose zany imaginations are whisking them on yet another epic adventure!

Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens takes the audience on a non-stop musical expedition as The Backyardigans become Daring Detectives, Cookie Security Guards and Space Ace Reporters who travel in hot pursuit of a mysterious space ship and its missing passengers – the cookie-crumbing Aliens! Tag along with the gang and their extraordinary host as they travel to shivering Frozen Toes Mountain, the blistering Hot Footsy Desert and the volcanic Lost Pirate Island – singing and dancing the whole way!

I expected Zackary to enjoy the show since he’s old enough now to sit through a movie and since he enjoys The Backyardigans television show so much. What I hadn’t expected was that Benjamin would love the show even more! He’s almost two now and I knew he would be excited about seeing the characters but I was completely surprised and thrilled by how the show held his attention!

We were seated in the front row of the balcony at the show so we had a perfect view, though Curtis and I did have some stressful moments as our kids danced around! Zackary was very involved in the show and had a great time yelling answers at Marsha the alien and the Backyardigans when they asked questions. And when the Backyardigans sang a few of his very favourite songs from the television show, he was absolutely ecstatic!

Benjamin was so cute and funny. When we first arrived, he reacted as he usually does to any scary and noisy situation: he locked his arms around my neck, cuddled his head into me and closed my eyes. When the show started, he had no interest in turning around so I had to pry his arms off my neck and turn him around so that he could see. He hugged me with one hand and pressed his cheek against mine as he watched.

As the show continued, he relaxed more and more until by the end he was positively leaping and dancing! My favourite moments were when the cute alien pet that the Backyardigans were following would pop out and dance around. Benjamin was great at spotting him and at one point, when I asked him if he had seen the little fellow, Benjamin replied in an amazed tone, “Yeah! Ee wave me!”

“He waved at you?” I replied. “That’s so nice!” Benjamin nodded with wide eyes and continued to stare at the stage with complete attention.

I really liked the way that the show combined live actors, stage props and projection screens to create such a wide range of sets and special effects. The Backyardigans visit islands, deserts and mountains and face dangers ranging from a volcano to an Egyptian labyrinth. With the help of the scenery on the screens, the sound effects and the clever props, the different settings were totally engaging for both kids and adults.

Overall, we had an incredible time at The Backyardigans: Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens and now that I see how much Benjamin enjoyed it we will definitely be going to other shows in the future. If you have a toddler or preschooler that loves The Backyardigans, why not take them to a show that will have them singing and dancing in delight? They’re sure to love every music-filled minute of the show!
