Team Umizoomi: Journey to Numberland DVD-Review and Giveaway-CLOSED

Since my children got the chance to review the first Team Umizoomi DVD, they have really taken a liking to the show. This new hit from Nickelodeon uses fun stories and characters to introduce children to basic math skills. When we got the chance to review the latest DVD in the series, Team Umizoomi: Journey to Numberland, Zackary and Benjamin were both excited. Here’s a brief synopsis:

team umizoomi journey to numberland box artTeam Umizoomi is ready for action! Join Milli, Geo and Bot as they use their mighty math powers to save the day! Identify shapes and build a super flashlight to look for a Brachiosaurus, figure out missing numbers in a sequence to open a cave that holds a diamond key, climb up crystals in pattern order, and so much more!

Even though Zackary’s math skills are far more advanced than those featured on the DVD, he still enjoys the plotlines of the different shows. He likes actively participating in solving the problems that are presented on the show and he especially enjoys the combination of cartoon characters and real characters that makes this show so intriguing for children. Benjamin, at almost two, adores Team Umizoomi. He especially loves the counting and the music that the show contains. He loves singing along to the easy-to-remember songs!

This DVD contains a special double-length episode and two regular-length episodes of “mighty math powers.” The double-length The King of Numbers episode is definitely the highlight of the disc and was lots of fun for both my boys. Zackary loved watching Zilch the Wizard overcome his dislike of numbers after learning about how to use them. “He didn’t like numbers, Mom, but that was because he didn’t know about them!” Zackary explained to me in excitement.

Team Umizoomi: Journey to Numberland is a fun DVD for young preschoolers and is a great way to introduce basic math concepts. If you have children under five in the house, check it out for yourself and let your kids have fun learning more about math.

Team Umizoomi DVD-Review and Giveaway

My boys have seen a lot of different television shows, so finding a new one that completely captivates them is always wonderful. And when the new show also helps build basic math skills and concepts, that’s even better! The latest DVD we received to review, Team Umizoomi, did just that. Here’s a brief synopsis:

team umizoomi coverCalling all UmiFriends! Team Umizoomi is ready for action! Join math heroes Milli, Geo, and Bot as they use their mighty math powers to help their friends in Umi City! Figure out the pattern to a baby hawk’s song to help Mama Hawk return to their nest, weigh buckets of coal and water to refuel a train, search for missing shapes to repair a kite, and more!

My boys loved this show, which introduces basic math concepts like patterns, shapes and counting. They sat completely fascinated through the entire DVD and when they immediately requested it again the next day, I sat down to watch it with them to see what was so appealing about the episodes.

The bright colours and catchy music definitely provide part of the appeal, but I think the other thing that my boys loved so much about Team Umizoomi was the way that it combined animated characters with real-life scenes and characters to add realism and a sense of interactive fun to the show.

A few days later, my son’s friend Jocelyn came to play and she watched the new movie with Zackary in the afternoon. She is over a year younger than Zackary and definitely doesn’t have as strong of a grasp of numbers (Zackary’s pre-Kindergarten teacher tells me his number concepts are well above Grade 1 levels), and she was completely enraptured with Team Umizoomi. She actually contributed answers and guesses when the characters requested them and I really noticed her building up some understanding of patterns and other abstract concepts.

Even more importantly, she now requests Team Umizoomi and no other show every single time that she comes to visit. Obviously the series must be appealing to get that kind of a response from children!

While Team Umizoomi is an entertaining show for children between one and five, the three to four-year-old age range will definitely get the most educational value out of this great DVD. For kid-friendly fun with a side of math skills, check out Team Umizoomi for yourself!
