As the proud new owners of a somewhat run-down one hundred year old house, it goes without saying that my husband and I have numerous renovation projects planned for the future. We have been scheduling our course of action as best we can, but in the meantime, we both have a deep desire to add a touch of personalization to our new home right away.

I was delighted when I was given a chance to review a Wallquotes.com vinyl decal for myself.

The Wallquotes.com site has its wall sayings conveniently arranged by both room and topic to make finding the perfect quote as easy as possible. I decided that my kitchen wall was one that could really use a bit of extra class, so I chose the Kitchen Wall Quotes section of the website and looked through the available phrases. I was tempted by “Approach love and cooking with equal abandon,” but the wall where I was planning to place the quote was more a part of the dining area than the cooking space. Eventually, I decided that the phrase “Wine makes a symphony of a good meal” was the perfect choice for our kitchen.

My husband and I have been avid home winemakers for the last three years, and we never tire of spoiling friends and relatives with our favorite creations when they come to visit. I knew that the quote would add a great elegant touch to our very wine-friendly kitchen.

Now that I had decided on the quote I wanted, I needed to choose the size and color of my decal. I measured the available wall space and decided on the 12” tall by 36” wide decal. Our kitchen is a soft yellow shade with dark blue trim, so I decided on Navy Blue for the smaller text of the decal and Copper for the large script-style “symphony.”

My decision made, I then just had to wait for the decal to be delivered. I was impressed by how quickly the custom-made item arrived. In slightly less than two weeks, the decal was at my door, carefully packaged and ready to apply. Our kitchen has an angled space above the door that leads to the basement, and my husband and I felt that it was the perfect spot for the quote. I washed and dried the wall carefully to ensure that the decal would adhere properly. Then, I unrolled the large scripted main word and, following the enclosed instructions, rubbed across it with my hand to reactivate the adhesive.

The decals consist of three layers. The bottom layer is a cardstock-like backing that is peeled off before application. The center layer is the vinyl decal itself. Finally, the top layer is a clear transfer tape paper that is removed after the decals have been applied to the wall. After rubbing across the entire length of the scripted word with both our hands and the edge of a credit card, my husband and I were ready to apply the sticker. He carefully pulled away the cardstock back while I held the end of the paper. When the backing was completely removed, we stood in front of the wall and carefully lined up the word until we were pleased with its placement before pressing it firmly onto the wall.

With a larger decal like the one we chose, I highly recommend using two people for application. Having my husband at one end of the decal and me at the other made the application process so much easier! Once the sticker was on the wall, my husband once again pulled out his credit card and rubbed the entire surface of the transfer tape paper with the edge to ensure that the decal was firmly affixed to the wall and that any air bubbles were smoothed out. Finally, he peeled away the transfer tape layer to reveal the gorgeous copper lettering in all its glory!

The other two sections of the decal were applied in the exact same manner, but because of their smaller size, peeling off the cardstock and positioning the print was much, much simpler, and could easily done by one person. The nice thing about vinyl decals is that they can often be customized to fit a certain space. Even though this particular item was designed to fit in an area that was only 12” high, spacing the lettering so that the decal looked great in a 24” high space was as simple as spreading out the three sections of lettering a little more.

The finished product looked absolutely stunning, and I loved how much class it added to our kitchen. The fact that it was positioned above the door that leads to our “wine cellar” meant the quote was even more suited to the location!
