Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole DVD Combo Pack-Review and Giveaway

I love the fantasy genre in any form. Whether I’m reading a book or watching a movie, chances are good that I’m enjoying fantasy fiction. When I saw previews for Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole I knew it was a movie I wanted to see. I don’t get the chance to watch many movies in the theaters since my infant son is still so demanding, but fortunately, I was given the chance to review the DVD combo pack for myself! Here is a synopsis:

Legend of the Guardians boxDirector Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) makes his animation debut with this fantasy adventure based on the beloved books. Young owl Soren marvels at tales of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, mythic winged warriors who battled to save all owl kind from the evil Pure Ones. When he and brother Kludd fall into the talons of the Pure Ones, it’s up to Soren to make a daring escape with the help of other brave owls and seek out the Great Tree, home of the Guardians. The stellar voice cast includes Abbie Cornish, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess and Hugo Weaving.

There were a few things that really made this movie wonderful in my mind. First of all, the graphics were absolutely stunning. I was reading some descriptions of the film as I watched the DVD, and it wasn’t until I saw this movie described as an animated feature that I realized just how stunning it is. The beautiful 3D brilliance of the graphics in Legend of the Guardians is, quite simply, phenomenal. I was especially impressed with how well the artists were able to balance the non-fiction elements of the movie (like the different owl species) with the stunning fantasy landscapes. The combined effect was completely captivating. The soundtrack was also a wonderful mix of old and new, combining gorgeous Celtic vocal performances with modern medleys sure to appeal to younger audiences.

Legend of the Guardians movie sceneThe plot was enjoyable, though slightly predictable for an adult, and despite the fact that the movie is animated, some of the battle scenes between the owls were ones that I know my four-year-old son wouldn’t have wanted to see. This is a movie that I will definitely watch with him in a few years, and even now I think I could probably enjoy it with him since I know at exactly which points I need to cover his ears and turn his head away. I would not watch this movie with young children without having previously viewed it, but a child of about ten or older will certainly find it fantastic.

I thoroughly enjoyed Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole and, like most of the fantasy fiction I enjoy, I expect to keep watching it again and again. The combination of the non-fiction inspired owl characters, the fantasy setting, the common themes of acceptance and peer pressure and the overall action provided by the plot create a movie that is sure to be enjoyed by almost anyone. If you’re looking for a great family movie to watch together this holiday season, check out Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole for yourself and get swept away by the adventures of Soren and his friends!
