I’ve heard from quite a few readers that figuring out how to enter blog giveaways is sometimes very confusing, so by popular demand, I have created Mommy Kat’s Three Easy Steps to Entering Blog Giveaways to help clear up any confusion and answer any questions. Enjoy!
Step 1: Make sure you’re in the right place. Blogs are laid out in many different ways and finding out how to get to the correct post isn’t always easy, especially if you haven’t entered many blog contests before. But in almost every case, clicking on the title of the review/giveaway article will take you to the correct page. For example, clicking on Green Works Cleaners-Review and Giveaway on my homepage will open a page containing the article with the comment box at the bottom for you to enter your giveaway entry information.
If you found the contest on Facebook or Twitter, there should be a link that will take you directly to the giveaway page. On Facebook, you will see a full link as well as the article’s title, both of which will direct you to the giveaway page. On Twitter, the link will most likely be a short link consisting of letters and numbers that looks something like this: http://bit.ly/hHWOGj. There are giveaways that are run exclusively on Twitter so a basic rule is, if there is a link to click on in any Tweet that mentions a giveaway, it’s best to click it and see exactly how to enter.
Step 2: Enter the giveaway. Most blog giveaways have a mandatory entry that involves visiting the website of the company offering the prize and sharing a favorite product or a fun fact on the post. These links can and should be easily accessible. I put links to the website both in the article itself and in the information about how to win so that finding the link is quick and easy. Once you’ve clicked the link and opened up the sponsor’s page, find a product you like, go back to the main giveaway page and leave a comment about what that product was. It would look something like this: I liked the black halter-top dress. The comment form is almost always at the bottom of the giveaway page, though a few sites have a pop-up window instead. Don’t forget to leave the site’s owner some way to get in touch you! On many sites, entering an email address will be a necessary step when filling out the comment form, but if it isn’t, make sure you either have an email address visible in your Blogger profile or you leave your email address in the comment itself. Protecting it from automated spam programs is always a good move and is as easy as typing out the full address, for example: info at mommykatandkids dot com. If you’re on a Blogger site and are new to blog giveaways, the easiest thing to do will be to comment annonymously and leave your email address in the comment. That way, there are no awkward sign-ins or other potentially confusing steps.
Step 3: Bonus entries. Blog giveaways generally enter the number of comments on a giveaway into random.org to choose winners, so leave one comment for every bonus entry you are entitled to. Each comment will be counted as an entry when the draw is done. For example, if you follow on Facebook and on Google Friend Connect, you would leave one comment stating: I like you on Facebook and one that says: I follow on GFC. On my blog, if you subscribe by email you are entitled to two bonus entries, so just add a number after the comment. For example: I subscribe by email #1 and I subscribe by email #2. The important thing to remember for these is that every valid bonus entry you’ve earned needs its own individual comment.
And that’s it; you’ve entered a blog giveaway! Here are a few other helpful hints:
- Leave information to confirm your entry in your comment. For a Facebook entry, leave your first name and last initial. For a GFC entry, leave your GFC username or a link to your profile.
- Leave the direct link to your daily Tweets. When you Tweet something, you will notice that if you click on your profile or just look right below the Tweet on your Twitter homepage, there will be a time below the tweet that looks like this: 15 hours ago or this: Jan 20. Right click on that link, copy the link location/shortcut and paste it into your comment. That link will lead directly to that specific Tweet. Alternatively, you can click on the link and go right to the Tweet itself, and then copy the URL in the address bar on that page and paste it into your comment.
- Read the rules carefully. Some sites offer a bonus entry for following on Twitter. I don’t; I require the reader to both follow and Tweet about the giveaway to get the entry. I’ve had more than one reader that has tried to claim a bonus entry by saying they follow on Twitter, but these comments invariably get deleted. Double check to make sure you don’t accidentally disqualify yourself.
I’ve tried to include all the pertinent information, but if I’ve forgotten something or if you have another question, just let me know. I’m here to help!
