Big Time Rush: Season One, Volume One DVD-Review and Giveaway

With three younger sisters, I have seen a lot of teen and tween-oriented family-friendly sitcoms in my lifetime. Some are fairly enjoyable, some are horribly cheesy and some are really rather brilliant. When I first heard about the Nickelodeon television series Big Time Rush, I had no idea which category it would fall into. But I was excited to be given the chance to find out by reviewing the all-new Big Time Rush: Season One, Volume One Two-Disc DVD, which is being released on March 29. Here’s a brief synopsis:

big time rush coverFrom hockey to Hollywood, join Kendall, James, Carlos, and Logan as they begin their journey to stardom! Hangin’ poolside at their apartment complex, The Palm Woods, chilling with the ladies (or at least trying to get their attention!) and working hard day in and day out-singing, dancing, making music videos and more. These guys are learnin’ about the dedication, determination, and friendships they need to make it big time!

Now I must admit, a television show about hockey players becoming singers in a boy band seemed pretty cheesy to me. I put on the first disc in the two-disc set and sat down with my boys to watch the special one-hour premiere episode of Big Time Rush entitled Big Time Audition.

Zackary actually watched quite a bit of the episode and he absolutely loved the physical humour in the show. From the overly dramatic scuffles between the four boys to their confrontations with authority figures, he watched delightedly and laughed out loud at the boys’ antics. He did have a few moments of unrest when the over-bearing and short-tempered record producer Gustavo Rocque went on one of his many tirades, but once I explained that the producer wasn’t a mean man and was just being silly, Zackary began enjoying those scenes as well.

My son is fairly easy to entertain, but I would never have guessed that I would be laughing out loud at the show too! There are some definite over-the-top moments that might elicit a few groans, but there is also plenty of original and well-thought-out comedy in this show! The highlight of the episode, for me, was when Kendall defended his friend James’s singing after a scathing review from Gustavo Rocque by performing the fantastic and catchy little song, Oh, You’re Such A Terd. I actually laughed hard enough that I had tears in my eyes, and since seeing the episode I occasionally find the song popping into my head at random times. No matter what I’m doing, it never fails to bring a smile to my face.

The next episodes chronicle the boys’ move to Los Angeles and their adventures as they begin their journey to fame, despite the inevitable conflicts with their producer and the battles with the finicky manager at the luxurious Palm Woods Hotel, the boys’ new home. The action-filled plotlines of the episodes really kept me guessing about what would happen next and how conflicts would be resolved. The DVD set contains the first eleven episodes of the series and even has two special features: Big time Break with Pop-Up Trivia, and Big Time Rush Photo Flipbook.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun Big Time Rush: Season One, Volume One was to watch. The occasional cheesy elements makes the show fun for younger kids, the originality and freshness of the humour makes it enjoyable for teens or adults and the fast-paced plots hold everyone’s interest right to the end. In fact, I liked the show so much that I insisted my husband watch a few episodes with me to see what he thought. “This show is pretty funny!” he exclaimed to me as the premiere episode ended. When one series can entertain a four-year-old boy, a 30-year-old woman and a 41-year-old man, it must be a winner! For fun, family-friendly entertainment at its best, Big Time Rush: Season One, Volume One is sure to satisfy!
