Billy Kelly The Family Garden CD-Review and Giveaway

For the most part, kids love all kinds of music but every kid has a special love for silly songs. Recently, I got the chance to review a new CD called The Family Garden by acclaimed children’s musician Billy Kelly and the collection of sixteen fun and silly tracks sounded like a great listening experience. I couldn’t wait to see what my boys thought of the music and put it on for the three of us.

billy kelly the family garden coverThe title track set the mood for the entire CD and Zackary and I were singing along by the middle of the song. This CD was such a blast! The songs had a fun folk beat with some ragtime influence, but the real appeal of Billy Kelly’s music was the wacky lyrics that had Zackary listening intently to see what would come next. Four of the tracks were fun studio shenanigans and the combination of tomfoolery and music was so much fun for my four-year-old.

My personal favourite was I’m Thinking Of An Animal, when Billy Kelly sang about the characteristics of certain animals and then left a silence for the child to shout the correct animal’s name. We both had a great time guessing the animals until Billy described an animal with three eyes that came in any size and had a tail with a light at the end. When he left the silence for us to guess the animal, Zackary and I both paused in bewilderment. When Billy chimed back in with, “Nah, I’m just kidding, that’s not really an animal!” I couldn’t help laughing.

The songs varied between lyric heavy songs and more music-based songs perfect for dancing. By using an increasing tempo and creating a sense of excitement with repeated stops and starts so that we never knew for sure if a song was over until the next song started, this CD really did a great job of encouraging children to get moving with energizing tracks like Coney Island Washboard. To cool down after the more upbeat and exciting songs, there are always the great lyrical songs perfect for singing along including titles like Why Is the Moon Following Me? and We Could Be Pen Pals.

Overall, this CD was lots of fun and a great listening experience for the boys. Billy Kelly’s fun-loving nature really came through well and every wacky song was a delight to listen to. One day I actually put this CD on myself after some especially frustrating behaviour from my sons. The music had me feeling mellower in minutes and soon had me bonding with Zackary and Benjamin instead of fretting about their antics. For fun and silly music with a fresh and energetic style, check out The Family Garden for yourself.

  1. I love that he began writing songs for his own kids, then turned that into a career in “kindie” music!
