Back-To-School Picture Book Fun from Scholastic Canada-Review

My darling oldest son has officially started Kindergarten and he absolutely loves it! He’s so sociable that I expected he would have a great time, but he was still a little nervous about going to “the big kid school.” Fortunately, we had some great autumn releases from Scholastic Canada to help shake off the nervousness and get ready for that all-important first day.

bailey by harry bliss coverWe received two fabulous back-to-school themed titles from Scholastic Canada. I decided to read Bailey by Harry Bliss to the boys right away. This book is perfect for getting into the school spirit and is so much fun! The story of a dog that goes to school like an ordinary child is ingeniously written and both my boys just loved it. Whether Bailey is giving a report on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s dog or trying to trade his bone for a tasty sandwich at lunch, he’s always the centre of attention. I loved the way the author used classics of dog behaviour in Bailey’s day at school, right down to Bailey eating his own homework!

eddie gets ready for school coverWe read Eddy Gets Ready for School by David Milgrim next. This book is a fanciful checklist for the first day of school accompanied by hilarious child-friendly illustrations. My boys loved watching Eddie perform essential tasks like drinking root beer and watching cartoons as part of his morning routine. Of course, the very next items on his list were “Pour out root beer” and “Turn the TV off this instant!” with his mother carefully supervising! After a little hassle and a lot of fun, Eddie does manage to get out the door, and off to an exciting day at school.

happy birthday hampster by cynthia lord coverWe also received Happy Birthday Hamster by Cynthia Lord and it was a huge hit with the entire family! Zackary and Benjamin absolutely loved picking out their favourite things from the cake store, the toy store and the party store as Dog and Hamster run errands, and when the story culminates with all Hamster’s friends leaping out and yelling, “Surprise!” Benjamin was absolutely delighted. He insisted on reading the book over and over again over the next few weeks and there wasn’t a single family member that could resist him when he came toddling over carrying the book and yelling, “Pize! Pize!”

The autumn picture books from Scholastic were the perfect way to anticipate a return to school and my sons absolutely loved them. Why not check out some of the fabulous new picture books from Scholastic Canada for yourself and enjoy a little time reading and relaxing with your child?
