October Baby is the newest coming-of-age movie available on DVD and Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox and recently I received a screener copy so that I could check it out. I tend to be the sensitive type so I had a feeling I’d be shedding a few tears as I watched. Here’s a brief synopsis of the film:
As the curtain rises, Hannah hesitantly steps onto the stage for her theatrical debut in college. Yet before she can utter her first lines, Hannah-unscripted-collapses in front of the stunned audience. After countless medical tests, all signs point to one underlying factor: Hannah’s difficult birth. This revelation is nothing compared to what she then learns from her parents: she was actually adopted … after a failed abortion attempt. Bewildered, angered, and confused, Hannah turns for support to Jason, her oldest friend. Encouraged by his adventurous spirit, Hannah joins his group of friends on a Spring Break road trip, embarking on a journey to discover her hidden past … and find hope for her unknown future. In the midst of her incredible journey, Hannah learns that every life is beautiful.
For various reasons, the plot of this movie was one that really interested me, despite the fact that it delved into the hot-button issue of abortion. Hannah’s journey to learn more about her past in the end became a journey into her future and carried an important message about the fact that sometimes moving forward first means forgiving the events of the past. And as expected, I found myself in tears more than once as I watched.

While the plot dragged a bit in places, the movie was fairly enjoyable and very touching as a whole. Check it out for yourself and see what you think!
