One of the biggest challenges as a parent is finding moments for “me” time. Some parents feel that there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to take time for personal indulgences and some even feel guilty about spending time enjoying themselves instead of caring for their family. But taking that time out for you is important. So how can you add “me” time to your busy schedule? It doesn’t have to be difficult!
Stay In – One of the easiest ways to enjoy some relaxing grown-up fun is to do something at home in the late evening hours after kids are in bed. Invite one or two friends over for snacks, drinks and great conversation or just cuddle up with your spouse to enjoy a board game or your favourite online game. It’s a great way to reconnect with the people you care about!
Involve the Kids – One of the hardest things about becoming a parent is that the activities you once enjoyed can be ones that now cause extra hassle and expense. Going out for the evening requires finding and paying for childcare and sometimes dealing with clingy, crying children too! So consider bringing your kids along to your yoga class or the latest musical. You get to continue your involvement with the activities you love and your kids will gain a new appreciation for different sports or the arts!
Enjoy the Little Things – Sometimes something as simple as getting up an hour early to read the paper in peace or enjoying a cup of tea during that blissful half-hour while the kids are playing in the back yard can do wonders for a parent’s overall feeling of well-being. Find those brief moments in the day when you can sneak in some quiet relaxation and take advantage of them!
It may seem like an unnecessary indulgence to spend a little extra money or take some extra time to pamper yourself doing the things you love, but an exhausted and stressed-out parent causes a stressed-out household. So take time for yourself and your entire family will appreciate how calm, collected and in control you feel!
