Wordless Wednesday with Linky-Kumite

boys sparring karate
Zackary has been taking karate since September but this was the first time he actually sparred with a partner. I was both proud and panicked the whole time!

If you have a Wordless Wednesday post, please link it up below; I’d love to check it out!

    1. He LOVES it Soozle! This was the first time doing the Kumite though; for the most part it’s been lots of cardio work and then lots of practicing basic punches, kicks and blocks, which I love because it’s all repetitive and non-contact. I’m actually a little surprised by how much he’s enjoying it, but totally delighted too!

      1. That’s awesome! :-) I can see how it would be scary for you, as a mom, to see him in such a physical sport! I have read though that marital arts is AMAZING for building self esteem in kids as well as being great for physical activity! Win win, really! :-)

    1. You know, Elizabeth, there were two kids that were a year younger in the class and of course they sparred with someone their own age, so the very first thing Zackary said to me after was, “We got to watch a little kid fight a little kid!” Lol Apparently his own sparring had slipped right out of his mind!

    1. He is! He’s actually two years younger than they normally start but the Sensei is amazing and doesn’t want to keep kids from learning. At this age, he only stays half the class, but he loves it!

    1. It is so good! This one is the wado-ryu style of karate, which has a strong focus on harmony and avoiding conflict. It’s been so interesting learning about it and I love that it’s self-defense with an emphasis on non-confrontation whenever possible.
