It’s amazing how easy it is to take clean water for granted when it’s something that has always been a part of our lives. Growing up in North America has given me the understanding that when I turn on a tap, I can drink the water that comes out without any concern. But I did a lot of travelling in my youth and I know from exploring places like Cuba and South Africa that clean water is a luxury in many parts of the world, not a right.
In fact, approximately one billion people do not have clean drinking water, many of whom are children in the developing world. As a result, thousands of children die every day. The P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program helps provide clean drinking water to these people through a water purifying technology developed by P&G. One small P&G purification packet quickly turns 10 litres of dirty, potentially deadly water into clean, drinkable water. Nearly 7 billion litres of clean drinking water have been provided by humanitarian organizations across the globe using P&G packets, helping to save an estimated 39,000 lives in more than 75 countries.

To celebrate the program, P&G challenged me to give back this month as well. And the timing couldn’t have been better since I was doing a large clean and purge in my house. I decided my act of giving would be to donate toys, clothes and other items to a few of my favourite charities in Regina. I packed up the car and spent the afternoon dropping off goods at the Salvation Army, the children’s ward at the hospital and Transition House. Looking for some inspiration to give back yourself? Here’s a few ideas P&G has for ways that you can give back:
- Giving Back on a Global Scale: Buying products at Walmart during the Clean Water campaign.
- Giving Back at Home: Doing the dishes, cooking a family meal, walking the dog, helping your kids clean their room.
- Giving Back at Work: Bringing your co-worker coffee, volunteering at your children’s school, encouraging your child to help a classmate with their homework.
- Giving Back in the Community: Helping a neighbour plant their garden, donating old toys to a women’s shelter, or carrying a senior’s groceries to their car.
P&G wants you to dive into this challenge too, so the company is offering one lucky Mommy Kat and Kids reader a fabulous prize pack containing Tide Pods, Pantene Pro-V Repair & Protect Shampoo, Always Radiant Infinity, Dawn Ultra Original Scent with Active Suds Dishwashing Liquid, Gillette Fusion ProGlide Power Razor and Mr. Clean Antibacterial Multi-Surfaces Liquid Cleaner, a $52 value, for taking part! To enter to win, just leave a blog comment about how you’re going to give back this month. Use one of the tips above or come up with your own idea; it’s up to you!
I love how easy P&G has made giving back globally with this program, and it’s such an important one too. It’s a great reminder of how small actions can make a big difference, whether you’re donating outgrown clothes, helping out at a local garden or getting your favourite spring cleaning products at Walmart Canada this month. When it comes to giving back and making the world a better place, every little action counts!
