Holiday Gift for a Religious or Spiritual Person
When the holidays roll around, gifts to soothe the body and develop the mind are everywhere, but finding a gift that nurtures the soul is decidedly more difficult. For those that are searching for a great spiritual gift, the popular Daily Guideposts series is always a wise choice.
Daily Guideposts is a collection of daily devotional readings designed to help to keep God close in mind and offer a tip or thought for the day ahead. The series is celebrating its 35th anniversary next year, and the books have never been more popular. I was recently given the chance to review the 2011 Edition of Daily Guideposts for myself.
The first thing I noticed about the Daily Guideposts book was the perfect length of the stories. I was able to read a daily thought in under one minute, and even reading it aloud to my husband took just a few minutes. With all the demands on a person’s time in our modern world, I really appreciated the fact that the daily reading could so easily be squeezed into a spare moment.
I also liked the way that each day’s story also included a scripture verse and a short prayer to help keep the day’s message in mind. Having the verses related to a true story helped to show the way that the bible’s lessons translate in the real world.
The stories themselves were so interesting, and I enjoyed each and every one that I read. I’ve often thought that some of the deepest wisdom in the world comes from children, so I especially enjoyed stories that featured their thoughts. In one reading, a grandmother recounted listening to her four-year-old grandson acting out a story that had his characters trapped in a snake-infested jungle surrounded by wild animals as night began to fall. The grandmother froze and listened intently, anxious to hear how the people would escape their predicament. “But God was with them,” the child announced, and then calmly began putting away his playthings, his story complete. What a great reminder for everyone!
The theme of the book is “Growing In Love,” and at the end of each month’s readings there are a few pages for the reader to jot down their reflections on how God’s love has helped and inspired them. I liked the idea of recording important changes and events throughout the year. Looking back on the writings at the end of the year would be so interesting.
Daily Guideposts 2011 would make the perfect Christmas gift for anyone with a desire for spiritual development and daily inspiration. The short length of the readings means that even the most frazzled individual should have no problem finding time for the day’s thought. With all of the stress in our daily lives, taking a moment to feed the soul is always a good thing. Thanks to the inspiring lessons in this book, Daily Guideposts 2011 is a gift that will keep on giving all year long.
