Why a Pearle Vision Eye Exam Should Be Part of Every Child’s Back-to-School Preparations

August 3, 2017 by Kathryn 31 Comments

Before I met my husband, I was a little lax about my boys’ eye exams. Even though I had heard it was important that children have yearly exams, living in a small town made booking appointments tricky and both boys did so well in school that I was confident their eyes were fine.

But when my glasses-wearing husband scheduled his own eye exam last year, I decided the timing was perfect to have both boys get their exams as well, though I fully expected them both to pass with flying colours. Imagine my shock when the optometrist announced my oldest would benefit from glasses for schoolwork and reading! And my experience was by no means unique; a recent survey found that one in four children have an undiagnosed vision problem.

Invite a Magical Friend to Your House with The Irish Fairy Door Company-Giveaway

November 8, 2016 by Kathryn 67 Comments

One of the things I loved most about Ireland was the eerie fairy tale-like quality of so many of its areas. Of course, most fairies originated in Ireland and when you’re driving through the winding roads surrounded by rock walls and trees, it’s easy to see why the magical sprites loved the area so much! While at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, we even had the chance to walk through a fairy village and see the homes of some of the country’s most popular residents. And I couldn’t help but wish we could bring a little fairy magic back to Canada with us when we left.

Luckily, The Irish Fairy Door Company has created a way for me to do just that! This company knows that every house is happier when a fairy lives there, and its innovative fairy doors create a way for you to invite a fairy into your house to stay. Recently I received an Irish Fairy Door and a Playtime Accessory Set to review and I was so excited to introduce my boys to the magic of an Irish Fairy. [Read more…]

How to Help Your Kids Express Themselves

September 29, 2016 by Kathryn 1 Comment

As adults, we often joke about wanting to be a kid again, but the truth is it can be hard to navigate childhood. They desperately want to be older and do things that are out of their reach, and processing their feelings when we turn them down can be difficult. They have so many emotions but don’t always have the maturity to know what to do with them. You don’t have to be a therapist to help. As parents, we have can learn many ways to help kids express themselves in a positive way. Read on for more!

Take Them on a Trip

This might sound weird, but road trips can work magic for getting your child to really open up and talk. Consider taking them to see something fairly educational, like these three monuments, the Grand Canyon, or the White House. Family trips are something they will value for years to come, and the stories they create about them are even better. They’ll also be able to write about them in school and, of course, writing is another form of self-expression. If you can’t get a road trip on the calendar any time soon, simply ask them questions while you’re driving them in the car. There’s something about the lack of eye contact that allows them to feel free to say what they mean. Turn down the music! [Read more…]

Get Natural Baby and Child Bedding for a Great Price at the Dream Designs Baby & Kids Healthy Sleep Month Event

April 8, 2016 by Kathryn 5 Comments

When it comes to comfortable, breathable and beautiful cloth, there aren’t many fabrics that can top cotton. But did you know that growing three pounds of cotton, enough for a sheet set or a shirt and jeans, requires one pound of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides? Not only is that damaging to the environment, any residual chemical residue left in the cotton could be damaging to a person’s health too!

Luckily, there are plenty of great natural and chemical-free alternatives to purchasing conventional cotton these days and here in Canada, Dream Designs is a great place to find them! This fabulous store has been providing natural fabric home products to Canadians since 1981 and its products are stylish, comfortable and earth-friendly.

Grandma’s Special Dinners

When I was young, my mom had a few meals that were only made on special occasions. Her famous Shrimp Curry Crepes, luscious Spinach Lasagna, Chocolate Chip Meringues…we knew that our favourite dishes were pretty much only going to be served when we made a special request on our birthdays or other occasions. Now, I share those foods and memories with my boys by occasionally whipping up some of the same meals for our own dinners! And in a slight rebellion, I usually do it on an ordinary day instead of a special occasion…to make that ordinary day special! [Read more…]
