A Quick Apple Cheddar Panini on Dempster’s Zero Bread Makes the Perfect Lunch

February 27, 2014 by Kathryn 68 Comments

If there is one food I absolutely adore, it’s the sandwich. The versatility of a sandwich makes it the perfect food in my eyes and I could eat a sandwich for every meal and be completely happy. Bacon and egg sandwiches make a great breakfast. Everyone loves a tuna salad sandwich at lunch. And a hearty chicken club is dinner at its best. In the mood for dessert? Hello peanut butter and jam!

But eating all that bread really isn’t necessarily the healthiest choice, especially with the added fat and sugar that some breads contain. So when I was given the chance to whip up a sandwich with new Dempster’s Zero 100% whole wheat bread, I couldn’t resist. This latest offering from Dempster’s is a 100% whole wheat bread that contains zero added sugar and fat with all of the great Dempster’s taste. I grabbed a loaf at the store and headed to the kitchen to whip up something tasty.

With a healthier bread to work with, I had two options. I could take advantage of the lower fat and sugar content by making something especially decadent. Or I could make a healthy sandwich that would now be even healthier thanks to Dempster’s Zero. I decided to go with the healthy option by creating a delicious and satisfying Apple Cheddar Panini. White Bread Just Got More Nutritious Thanks To Dempster’s Smart-Giveaway

March 29, 2012 by Kathryn 78 Comments

When I was a child, I loved white bread because we had it so rarely. Except for a few special occasions, my mom only bought multigrain and whole wheat bread. I enjoyed both, but getting a loaf of soft and doughy white bread was always a special treat. When I got a little older, my tastes changed and I preferred the complex flavour of multigrain bread products. And then I became a parent and I found I had become just like my mom. White bread just wasn’t something that entered our house.

dempste's smart white breadWhen I heard about new Dempster’s Smart bread, I was intrigued. Dempster’s Smart is bread made with sixteen whole grains that promised the taste and texture of white bread. I received some coupons to test out the bread for myself and I was so curious to see if it actually tasted the same as the white bread I loved so much as a child!

I picked up a few loaves of bread at the local grocery store and headed home to test out the bread. The first thing I noticed was the texture; it was denser and less moist than traditional white bread. I found I actually preferred the heavier texture; it tasted almost the same as homemade bread!

Over the next few days, I used the bread for sandwiches and toast and the whole family devoured it. There’s nothing new about that; they love their bread! But it was nice to see that they enjoyed the Dempster’s Smart bread just as much as any other variety!

dempster's smart smartmanDempster’s recently held a great promotion on the Dempster’s Facebook page challenging Canadians to share their favourite white bread recipes in the Dempster’s White Bread Taste-Off. In just a few days, the top ten recipes will be announced and the finalists will compete in a taste-off. At the end one lucky contestant will win the grand prize of $10,000! Make sure you follow along with the action on Facebook to find out which recipe is judged the most delicious way to use white bread!

No matter what type of bread you prefer, Dempster’s has a variety of choices to satisfy your household. From traditional doughy and delicious white bread to great multigrain varieties, Dempster’s has you covered! Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by Dempster’s Smart bread. It did have an authentic white bread flavour and I was glad to know that it was a better nutritional choice for my family than traditional white bread. I really do love multigrain bread so it will still remain my number-one choice. But if I’m buying white bread for a special treat or recipe, Dempster’s Smart is the brand I’ll be choosing! Check it out for yourself and enjoy whole grain bread with a white bread taste!

Taste the Goodness of the New Freshly Baked Dempster’s Bagels!

March 14, 2012 by Kathryn 2 Comments

Have you heard the legend of the bagel? There is an old story about a ruler who, centuries ago, was looking for new sources of income and decided to charge a tax on the ovens that bakers used to make their bread. One innovative baker decided that to avoid the tax, he would cook his bread dough in boiling water instead of baking it. And so the bagel was created. In fact, some people even claim that the ruler was so delighted by the new, chewy delicacy that he cancelled the tax on the bake ovens!

Dempster's 12 Grains BagelsWhether or not this story is true, there is one part of it that almost every person agrees with: bagels are delicious! And recently Dempster’s has made the already-popular bagel even better with a brand new recipe that is baked fresh every day! I am a huge bagel lover and so I was very excited when I received some coupons to try out the new bagels for myself.

The bagels come in eight tasty varieties and I decided to choose the Sesame Bagels and the WholeGrains 12 Grain Bagels for my family. I love these varieties because my husband can satisfy his sweet tooth with a jam-topped bagel while I indulge in a savoury snack by topping my bagel with smoked salmon cream cheese!

I tried the Dempster’s Sesame bagels first and I immediately noticed how soft and chewy they seemed compared to most bagels. They really did have a fresh look and feel. I popped one in the toaster and when it popped up and I had topped it with butter, I took that first bite.

The outside of the bagel had toasted to crispy perfection, but the inside of the bagel was just as soft and chewy as it had been when I took it out of the bag. I really loved the soft texture of these bagels; I sometimes find bagels can be a little tough after toasting, but the new Dempster’s bagels weren’t tough at all!

The 12 Grain bagels were even better in my opinion; I loved that they had flax in them. And to make my son’s lunches a little more interesting, I decided to send him to school with a bagel sandwich for a few days too. He devoured his turkey and cheese bagels and I loved that he was getting all the benefits of the different grains in the bagel every day! If you love bagels, why not treat yourself to a bag of freshly baked Dempster’s Bagels? The new recipe is so tasty and has such a great soft and chewy texture that you’re sure to fall in love with bagels all over again!

Dempster’s OvenFresh Baguettes-Review

May 19, 2011 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

I love to cook, but there are days when I just seem to run out of time before I can get supper ready. For example, on any day that my stepdaughter has a softball game, we have to be out of the house by about 5:15 in order to be at the softball field by 5:45 so that she can warm up for her 6:15 game. Needless to say, that doesn’t leave a lot of time for supper.

dempsters roasted garlic ovenfresh baguettesYet even in those circumstances, I really don’t want to feed my family a bunch of unhealthy convenience food every time we have an extra-curricular activity to attend. So when I learned about Dempster’s Chef John Placko’s newest cooking trend, semi-scratch, I was intrigued.

Basically, semi-scratch is the act of taking freshly prepared food and combining it with quick and easy convenience food that have the same taste and nutritional benefits as homemade products. Preservative-free Dempster’s OvenFresh Baguettes are the perfect example of a semi-scratch staple and I was lucky enough to be able to try a package of the new Roasted Garlic variety of baguettes for myself.

Dempster’s OvenFresh Baguettes come partially cooked and bake up fresh and hot in only eight minutes. What really struck me about this product when it arrived was the ingenious packaging. Thanks to an exclusive vacuum-sealed bag, the baguettes stay fresh and ready to bake for up to 45 days with no refrigeration or freezing!

On one of our next pressed-for-time supper days, I decided to incorporate the baguettes into our meal plan. I prepared a fresh garden salad with grilled chicken and popped the baguette in the over to serve on the side. The baguette smelled absolutely fantastic when I took it out of the oven. I cut it into slices and buttered it and then placed it on the table with the salad to see how my family liked it.

Zackary was a little bit hesitant about the garlic at first, but once I convinced him to try a slice, he couldn’t get enough of the soft and flavourful baguette. The rest of the family was just as enthusiastic and the slightly nutty garlic flavour of the baguette was the perfect compliment to the vegetables and grilled chicken. The baguette had a slightly crispy crust with a nice soft interior and was a huge hit overall.

dempsters ovenfresh baguettes slicedThe baguettes come in packages of two and I saved the other baguette for a night when my husband and I were sharing a bottle of wine. We decided to indulge in a variety of cheeses with our wine and I baked the baguette to serve with the cheese. The roasted garlic was the perfect choice to serve with cheese and in just eight minutes I was able to add a delicious special touch to our evening that made a spontaneous snack seem date-night romantic.

Dempster’s OvenFresh Baguettes come in four different varieties and retail for approximately $3.49 for a package of two. They are a great convenience food to have on hand for any meal or snack that could use a special quick-to-prepare extra touch. And if you’re looking for more great tips and tricks that can help get a delicious and healthy dinner on the table a little quicker, visit Dempster’s Facebook page to check out exclusive how-to videos, share your own time-saving tips and enter to win great prizes!

As parents, we simply aren’t always going to have time to prepare a full-course homemade meal. But with great products like Dempster’s OvenFresh Baguettes, even a quickly prepared meal can be a little more special. Why not give them a try?
