Help Your Child Learn to Read with the Little Champion Reader Kit-Giveaway

January 28, 2014 by Kathryn 94 Comments

I am passionate about the importance of childhood literacy and the role that early education can play in creating successful readers. As an avid reader myself, I am determined to help my children grow to be strong readers as well and luckily for me, there are so many fabulous tools and materials available to help me with that goal. Recently the creator of the Little Champion Reader kit contacted me about reviewing her innovative three-in-one system and with Benjamin at the perfect age to start developing some basic literacy skills, I was only too happy to oblige.

This kit is colourful, beautiful and incredibly complete. It includes nine DVDs, fifteen sliding flashcards, fifteen phonics books and three blank flashcards with a dry erase pen. The kit even includes a bonus CD featuring more than 150 free printable worksheets! Benjamin and I sat down to examine the kit together and see what the contents were like.

Rock ‘N Learn Sight Words DVD-Review and Giveaway

August 28, 2011 by Kathryn 67 Comments

Zackary has had a love of language since he first learned to talk and as a writer, I worked hard to help him develop that love whenever possible. We talked about the different sounds letters made, played simple rhyming games and made up stories together. All the “games” helped Zackary to develop some very strong pre-reading skills.

rock n learn sight words box artLast year, we got the chance to review a product that taught Zackary some basic sight words and I was so proud of how quickly he learned the 20 most common words in the English language. When he started pre-Kindergarten, we suddenly had much less time to work together on reading skills and his development in that department came to a bit of a stand-still. I decided not to worry about it too much since he was developing important social skills instead. After all, social skills are just as important in a public school setting!

When summer arrived, I knew I wanted to get back to working on some of the skills we had been practicing but between vacations and special events, we didn’t have much free time. So when I got the chance to review the newest DVD from Rock ‘N Learn entitled Sight Words, I was thrilled. What a perfect low-pressure way to build on my son’s current knowledge of sight words!

The DVD uses music, interactive characters and fun stories to teach children sixty different sight words. All twenty of the words Zackary had already learned were included, which meant that in addition to learning new words, he would be able to review the words he currently knew. I played the DVD for him and sat down to see what he thought.

I was immediately struck by how engaging the story was. The characters were fun and believable and I loved the fact that songs were incorporated as a learning tool. Singing something can be one of the most effective ways to remember it and the original songs in Sight Words had both my children bouncing in their seats!

Zackary was always excited when he saw a word that he already knew and he especially liked being given the chance to read a sentence before the characters on the DVD could. I loved the way that the words were often illustrated with actions to make them more clear and the way that the sight words were used in context so that Zackary could incorporate some logic skills to figure out the words he didn’t know.

After watching Zackary for a bit, I started participating with him as he watched the DVD. I found it was helpful to pause the movie when he decided to try to read one of the sentences. Since he does sound out words, it was sometimes frustrating for him to get halfway through a sentence only to have the character read it to him before he could finish. By giving him more time to sound out each word, he got to enjoy the feeling of accomplishment without any time restrictions.

While Sight Words is designed more as a way for children to memorize the common sight words than as a way for them to work on reading skills, with a little parental help it can help develop both skills. Zackary and I both enjoyed the DVD and Zackary has watched it a few times since that first day. It is the only DVD he has ever watched that actually motivates him to actively participate in the action and I love seeing which words he has learned and remembered each time he puts it on.

Rock ‘N Learn offers DVDs to help children develop skills in everything from phonics and reading to math, science and social studies. And for younger children, there is also a collection of Preschool and Kindergarten DVDs that focuses on basics like colours, shapes and the alphabet.

If you have a child between three and six, Sight Words is a great DVD choice for you. Learning sight words is such a great feeling for a child that longs to learn to read and is the perfect way to start developing a love of literacy. And best of all, it’s incredibly entertaining to watch! Check out the DVD for yourself and start developing your child’s reading skills today!
