Top 5 Emergency Telephone Hotlines To Keep on File

August 6, 2018 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

We’re lucky to live in a society that has emergency hotlines to help those in sudden need. But it is very important to have those hotlines on file in case a crisis arises. It’s not always an easy step to pick up the phone and ask for help, but it can be necessary when you’re in a situation where you cannot help yourself or the person in need.

A hotline enables you to communicate with trained personnel who know how to handle your current situation, and offer you the assistance that you need. Several organizations offer immediate help. From sexual assault to substance abuse to domestic violence, you can get help 24 hours a day.

Of course, calling a hotline might not mean calling every time a problem arises. Some issues, especially those to do with mental health, will be far more effective if a person seeks further assistance from a medical practitioner after dealing with the immediate crisis. [Read more…]

Prep Your Family, Stock Your Emergency Kit and Check out these 3 Great Tips for Emergency Preparedness Week

May 8, 2017 by Kathryn 6 Comments

Back when my boys and I lived in Lumsden, I had a stash of emergency supplies in the basement that included non-perishable food, bottled water, a flashlight, batteries, candles and a few other essentials just in case of an emergency.

But when we moved to an apartment in another city, then a townhouse and then another townhouse, my emergency kit ended up disassembled and in disarray. Sure, we have canned goods in the house, a few bottles of water by the door and a flashlight stuffed in a drawer of junk. But in case of an emergency, I no longer have my easy-to-grab kit full of every essential my family might need.

And I’m not alone! Even though it’s recommended that families keep an kit ready to get them through a 72-hour emergency if needed, only 34% of Canadians have such an emergency kit in their home. But if you’re like me and don’t currently have an emergency kit, there’s no better time to remedy that than right now!

May 7th to the 13th is Emergency Preparedness Week in Canada, and Duracell has teamed up with the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs to help raise awareness about the importance of being ready for an emergency. Check out these three tips to help ensure your family knows what to do in an unexpected situation! [Read more…]

The first week of May here in Saskatchewan is a week of sunshine, blue skies and gloriously warm temperatures. With such beautiful weather, I can’t help but feel like nothing in the world could go wrong. But the first week of May is also Emergency Preparedness Week, a time to make sure that your house and family are ready for the unexpected. If you’re not sure where to start, Duracell Canada has a handy checklist and some tips just for you! Print them out and make sure you’re ready for anything!

I didn’t realize until I read through this list just how many emergency items we needed to add to our house. And the items we did have weren’t conveniently packed together. Instead, batteries, bandages and non-perishible food were in different places on different stories of the house…not the best situation in case of an emergency! That’s why I’m making it my mission to assemble a proper emergency kit for my household over the next seven days. [Read more…]

September 17, 2013 by Kathryn 100 Comments

With school back in session for the year, teenagers are taking extra time to choose their clothes and do their makeup before heading out the door. But fall is also a time when breakouts can flare up for many, which can be a tough blow to a young woman’s self-esteem. Even in my thirties, I still deal with hormonal breakouts each month and while they’re usually not severe, they are incredibly frustrating. That’s why OXY Canada has released a new product perfect for helping on-the-go teens ensure that their skin looks its best.

New OXY Emergency Acne Vanishing Treatment Wipes feature an advanced technology that helps control oil and works to fight breakouts all day. The wipes come in a convenient resealable pouch and are meant to be used twice daily after cleansing to help heal existing acne and prevent future breakouts. I received an assortment of OXY products including the new OXY Emergency Acne Vanishing Treatment Wipes to review and I was curious to see how they would work for me.

Keep Important Family Information Close at Hand with Emergency Profile from TELUS Health Space

October 15, 2012 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

My family has a history of allergies and I am no exception. While I have an irritating seasonal allergy that causes me to sneeze uncontrollably at certain times of the year, I also have a fairly uncommon food allergy that’s even more dangerous. I’m allergic to raw mushrooms; while I don’t show any visible symptoms when eating them, they make my throat swell which causes breathing issues if the reaction is severe.

It’s not a common allergy and it’s not one that I have to worry about too often but when I was younger, there could have been a time that letting people know about that allergy would have been incredibly important. That’s why I was so intrigued when I heard about Emergency Profile. [Read more…]
