How To Keep Your Kids Entertained This Halloween

November 2, 2011 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

If you are anything like me and you sometimes find it tricky to find activities to keep your kids occupied during the holidays or weekends, why not make weekends more exciting by doing some cooking and crafts? On a Saturday afternoon when the kids are desperate for entertainment, put on your apron and get messy with some spooky Halloween treats! I will show you how to whip up some choco-spiders and brain clusters; sweet treats that are fun to make and much cheaper than buying novelty Halloween sweets.

Choco-Spiders – Carefully separate the two halves of a chocolate Oreo and place a spoonful of cool melted milk chocolate on one half. This is a messy job which your kids will love so while they get their fingers sticky, you can have a five minute sit-down and play Cheeky Bingo, read a book or have a cup of tea. Place a few liquorice strands into the chocolate and trim to look like little legs before sandwiching the cookies back together. Spread more melted chocolate on the top cookie and stick on two mini M&Ms for eyes. And there you have it, spooky chocolate spider treats.

Brain Clusters – Simply melt butter and pink marshmallows in a pan. Once the mixture has cooled, gently mix into a bowl of ready-popped popcorn. The mixture will be very sticky, but a dab of butter rubbed between your palms will make it easy to shape with your hands. Take a small handful and roll it into a ball. Allow to set in the fridge and you will have a pink, misshapen, lumpy cluster that looks just like a brain.

Graveyard Cupcakes – The only ingredients you will need are some mini chocolate cupcakes, green frosting and a thin slab of milk chocolate. Just dye your frosting green and spread it on the cup cake. Break a piece of chocolate into a rectangle shape and push it vertically into the cake so it resembles a headstone. For the perfect finishing touch, write RIP on the chocolate using a white frosting pen.

Happy eating!

Spooky Halloween Specials on Disney Junior-Review

October 2, 2011 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

October is here and that means kids everywhere have only one thing on their minds…Halloween! Disney Junior understands and for the next month, the preschool-friendly channel is celebrating with special Halloween episodes of all your child’s favourite Disney Junior shows!

disney junior logoHalloween episodes of great shows like Special Agent Oso and Jungle Junction will be shown every Monday in October and the celebration will wrap up on Monday October 31 with an all-day marathon of Halloween episodes and specials! We received a screener DVD containing a few of the new Halloween episodes to review and Zackary and his friend Jocelyn sat down to watch the DVD together.

The DVD we received had Halloween episodes of Jake and the Never Land Pirates, Stella and Sam and Handy Manny. Jocelyn was especially excited to see Jake and the Never Land Pirates; it’s one of her favourite shows! Zackary felt the same way about Handy Manny. He was so delighted to see the special Halloween adventures of Manny and his tools. It was obvious from watching the two kids that Disney Junior’s month-long Halloween celebration was going to have something for everyone to enjoy!

Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Halloween Parade DVD-Review and Giveaway

August 26, 2011 by Kathryn 113 Comments

Halloween is one of our family’s favourite times of year. We go a little overboard, with fun prizes, costumes for the whole family and elaborate decorations. But when we see the grins on the kids’ faces, it’s totally worth every minute of work. With such a love of Halloween, I was especially excited when we got the chance to review Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Halloween Parade from Nickelodeon. Here’s a brief synopsis:

dora the explorer dora's halloween parade box artHappy Halloween! Celebrate with Dora, Boots, and Little Monster in two nighttime Halloween adventures, and then join Dora for a backpack and musical parade too! Your preschooler can join the fun in this brand new DVD! Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Halloween Parade will be released on DVD on August 30, 2011, for the suggested retail price of $16.99.

The DVD contains four fun episodes of Dora’s adventures including two special Halloween episodes and two episodes about other fun celebrations. I loved the way that everyone dressed up for Halloween, including Dora’s friends Map and Backpack! How could anyone not smile when they saw Map dressed up as a colourful crayon!

The Halloween episodes featured a friendly Halloween character called Little Monster and I really liked the fact that the episodes had all kinds of fun Halloween content, including monsters, without being frightening in any way. And seeing the different costumes and activities that Dora and her friends enjoyed were so much fun!

Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Halloween Parade is the perfect fall-themed DVD to get your kids excited about the end of summer. Sure, it’s the end of summer freedom, but it’s also the start of all the fun holidays of autumn! Check out the DVD for yourself and enjoy some fantastic fall fun with Dora!

Buy It: To purchase Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Halloween Parade, check your local DVD retailer on August 30, 2011, or pre-order online now
