A Review of Christie Hsioa’s First Novel Journey to Rainbow Island

March 13, 2014 by Kathryn 10 Comments

Busy school days don’t leave me with much time to read and relax, so when my boys have a break, one of the advantages is that I have a little more time to read. Recently I was offered a copy of a middle-school novel called Journey to Rainbow Island, the first novel from author Christie Hsaio, and as a lover of fantasy fiction, I decided to see what it was like.

journey to rainbow island bookWith a beautiful island, a mysterious young heroine, plenty of magic and a dark dragon, this book had all the elements of fantasy that I normally love. I expected a somewhat simplistic plot as the book’s suggested reading age is 8-12 years. But even a few chapters in, I had a feeling the suggested age wasn’t terribly accurate. The plot is certainly basic enough for younger readers, but the language is so flowery that I can’t really imagine it holding a child’s interest for long.

The storyline had all the elements of success in my opinion, but the needlessly descriptive writing caused the book to fall flat and the hyperbole that filled the book’s pages also led to some rather unexpected and easily avoidable errors. If there’s one thing that quickly pulls me out of a story, it’s a mistake in spelling or grammar. It’s the reason editors are so important and coming across more than one error while reading was unpleasant and ruined what flow the story did have. [Read more…]

Introduce Your Children to Two Classic Muppet Movies Now on Blu-ray from Disney

January 16, 2014 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

When I was just a child, one of our family’s weekly activities was sitting down to watch reruns of The Muppet Show each week. Our entire family, adults and children alike, couldn’t get enough of the loveable characters and their adventures. And when the first Muppet movies were released, we just had to sit down to watch those as well!

I had the chance to review the Blu-ray release recently and I was pretty excited to introduce my boys to the Muppets as I once knew them! Here’s a brief synopsis:

A treasure trove of hearty laughs is yours when two of the funniest, most action-packed Muppet movies of all time make their Disney Blu-ray debut in a 2-Movie Collection. From the special star-studded lunacy in Muppet Treasure Island to the jewel-heist hilarity of The Great Muppet Caper, these two classic comedy-adventures are packed with mirth, mayhem and, of course, Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, Fozzie, Gonzo and all your Muppet favorites. Jim Henson’s whodunit heist-movie The Great Muppet Caper and the silly and swashbuckling high-seas adventure, Muppet Treasure Island, both restored and remastered, are loaded with unforgettable music and sparkling special effects. Aruba has Activities to Excite the Whole Family

July 10, 2013 by Kathryn 10 Comments

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Aruba Tourism Authority for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

When I choose a vacation destination, one of my top priorities is finding a location that has activities the entire family can enjoy. I love an exotic beach vacation and honestly I could likely be happy just relaxing on a chair by the water sipping ice-cold beverages for a week. But my boys like action and adventure and if I don’t give them a way to burn off their almost inexhaustible energy, I always end up regretting it.

Aruba has just the type of dynamic, fun-filled atmosphere that I need for my family vacations and the more I learn about the various activities this beautiful little island has to offer, the more excited I get about making it our next vacation destination. [Read more…]

Beat the Clock and Play as a Team with Volcano Island Coundown-Giveaway

December 3, 2012 by Kathryn 57 Comments

My boys love to play board games but often, it’s hard for me to find games that are easy enough for my boys to play and still entertaining for me. Fortunately, Spin Master Games knows games well enough to be able to create one that’s fun for kids and adults, so when the company gave me the chance to review its newest game, Volcano Island Countdown, I couldn’t wait.

volcano island countdownThe first thing that appealed to me about this game was that it was a cooperative game rather than a competitive one. My boys have issues with competitiveness that can often lead to disaster when playing a regular board game. I was happy that wouldn’t be an issue with Volcano Island Countdown.

Zackary was immediately captivated by the fact that the game involved a volcano. My oldest son has quite a scientific mind and as a result, has a fascination with many natural wonders including volcanoes. He was thrilled to have the chance to play a game involving one, especially when he learned that the volcano would explode if we didn’t win the game quickly enough! [Read more…]
