Five Facts About Myopia That Parents Should Know

June 26, 2019 by Kathryn 9 Comments

As a mom of three, I sometimes get overwhelmed with all the information given to parents in our modern age. Keeping up with the latest health news and advice is tricky—especially when it’s changing all the time!

Eye health is something I’ve been passionate about ever since my oldest son was unexpectedly prescribed glasses to correct myopia (also known as nearsightedness) three years ago. He hadn’t shown any signs of eye problems, so I hadn’t thought to make an eye appointment for him. His diagnosis came as a complete shock!

Since that day, I’ve made sure I stay as up-to-date as I can both on my boys’ eye exams, and on current information about myopia. Whether or not your own child has myopia, these five facts are ones that every parent should know! [Read more…]

Fall weather came early to Saskatchewan this year, and I have a feeling that the chill of winter isn’t far behind. In fact, we’ve already had our first (now melted) snowfall!

And while winter does have its own charm, it also signals the start of cold and flu season! With two school-aged boys and a baby in the house, that means I’m on high alert for those coughs and sniffles.

That’s why I like to make sure I have Echinaforce Junior in the house! These chewable tablets are suitable for children two years of age and older, and contain fresh echinacea root and herb.

Preparing Family for Winter Cold and Flus

November 25, 2016 by Kathryn 36 Comments

My mother always told me that I was a very healthy child overall but when I did get sick, I REALLY got sick. I remember some of my worst illnesses from my youth and my mom remembers even more, including an occasion when I had to be rushed to the hospital because I suddenly and inexplicably started convulsing on the floor. The doctors couldn’t explain the cause and it never happened again, but I can only imagine how terrifying that day must have been for my mom.

Now that I’m a parent myself, I’m happy to see that my own boys seem to have taken after me with regards to illnesses. Neither gets sick very often and sometimes we even manage to make it through an entire blustery Saskatchewan winter without so much as a cough or a sniffle. But when my boys do feel under the weather, I’m always ready to help them feel better as best I can!

children's tylenol

Personally, I’ve found that having Children’s TYLENOL® and Children’s MOTRIN® in the house is one of the simplest ways to ensure I’m ready to help my boys feel better. Just last winter, Benjamin woke up in the middle of the night hallucinating with a high fever, though he’d gone to sleep feeling fine. He was almost in tears thinking that there were mean people in his room, and my heart hurt for my poor, confused boy. I gave him a dose of Children’s TYLENOL® to bring down the fever and soon his forehead was cool and he was sleeping peacefully once more. [Read more…]

It may have been a pretty mild winter in most parts of Canada, but that certainly didn’t mean that there were no colds and flus making the rounds! In fact, my boys both spent almost a month with stuffy noses and occasional bouts of coughing. One of the hardest parenting jobs has to be comforting a sick child, since so often we’re helpless to help our babies feel better as they’re stuffed up and struggling to breathe.

boogie mist and wipes

I’m a big fan of natural solutions when it comes to helping my boys feel better and luckily, there are a few simple ways to help unclog that stuffy nose when a cold is making our lives miserable. Boogie Wipes and Boogie Mist are a kid-friendly and effective way to help get the boogies out so kids feel better fast. Fight Off a Kid’s Cold Fast with These 4 Tips for Fall Health-Giveaway #ONatural

September 17, 2015 by Kathryn 88 Comments

Here in Saskatchewan, we went from glorious sunny autumn days to cold, rainy ones almost as soon as school started. If anyone was in any doubt as to whether or not it was fall yet, the weather has certainly settled that! And between the colder temperatures and the exposure to so many more kids (and germs) every day, my boys’ health is at the top of my mind.

Luckily, a few simple tips, tricks and techniques help me treat those inevitable sniffles quickly and efficiently when my boys show signs of getting sick. These are my top four methods for fighting off the first stages of a cold:

Tea and Honey

My boys are both huge fans of tea, and since a hot cup of green or herbal tea is full of antioxidants and also helps sooth a scratchy throat, it’s a great choice for fending off a cold. Add a bit of raw honey for its anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and I have a delicious drink that also helps my boys feel better fast. [Read more…]
