Give Kids a One on One Tutoring Experience Online with Revolution Math

September 13, 2018 by Kathryn 2 Comments

With the new school year underway and both my boys now diving into their work, I’m once again looking forward to following their learning throughout the year and helping them succeed any way I can.

And for my middle son Benjamin, that means I’ll be keeping an eye on his math! Benjamin gets good grades when it comes to math, but it’s by far his least favourite subject.

I want to change that this year and give him a passion for learning by helping to make math a more fun and rewarding experience. And Revolution Math is helping me do that!

Revolution Math is an online tutoring service that specializes in helping children in Grades 2-5 develop their math skills. With games, points, gems and rewards, it’s set up in a way that helps make math fun instead of a chore. [Read more…]

For many children, math can be one of the trickier school subjects to really master. If you have a child that’s struggling to learn math, take advantage of the extra free time in summer to help him learn rounding with decimals in a fun way!

This simple game is fast-paced and exciting whether you let your children compete against one another or just set a timer to see how quickly your little one can answer the questions!

Keep Kids Learning this Summer with Hot Wheels FUNdamentals #PlayAdvocates

June 30, 2015 by Kathryn 19 Comments

With school out and my boys home every day, there’s plenty of playtime filling our hours right now! And while I don’t mind leaving my boys to their own creative devices for the majority of their summer vacation, I do still want them to have some intellectual stimulation as well. Zackary challenges his mind quite regularly with educational games and nightly reading, but finding fun learning activities for Benjamin is a little bit harder. Luckily, one of my boys’ very favourite brands, Hot Wheels, has come to the rescue!

My oldest son was a huge Hot Wheels collector when he was younger and at one point, he knew the name of every single one of his almost 200 Hot Wheels cars. (I didn’t even realize they had names until he asked me one day what the car’s name was and I found it printed on the bottom!) And while Benjamin wasn’t quite as obsessive about Hot Wheels as his brother, he also spent many happy hours playing with the tracks and racing the cars.

Teach My All-in-One Kits for Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers Build Valuable Early Learning Skills-Giveaway

May 22, 2013 by Kathryn 130 Comments

I am a big believer in the importance of reading and math. Zackary and I used to spend lots of time playing with letters and numbers, talking about the ways they go together and building some of the early learning skills that would lead to reading, writing and mathematics proficiency in the future. Now, at three-years-old, Benjamin is reaching that same age when building some basic early learning skills will help him in the future.

Teach My is a Canadian-based company started by momtrepreneur Christy Cook that specializes in helping children build those important early-learning skills. I first learned about the original Teach My Toddler kits during a feature on my favourite show, Dragon’s Den, back in 2008. Since then, the company has expanded its line of early learning kits to include a Teach My Baby kit and a Teach My Preschooler kit as well as offering individual learning kits for reading, writing, numbers, letters and more.

Carlito C. Caterpillar’s MathHouse Games Card Set-Review and Giveaway

October 21, 2011 by Kathryn 49 Comments

I often talk about how important I feel good reading is for a child’s development. But really, good math skills are just as essential. People tend not to realize just how much math is present in our everyday lives, but whether we’re managing the family budget or dividing a pizza, math is everywhere. And the more a child understand about numbers and the ways they can be used, the better they can understand the world around them.

I recently got the chance to review a unique set of math games called Carlito C. Caterpillar’s MathHouse Game Card Set. This collection of 40 math game cards on a convenient metal ring was designed to help preschool to early elementary school children develop their math skills through sensory learning. I was very excited to see what Zackary thought of some of the games.

The first game we played was Hungry Lion. The cards each feature instructions about how to play the games as well as information about which skills are learned. Hungry Lion taught the concept of more and less, including the use of the greater than and less than symbols. I simply took two plates and put different amounts of a food on each plate. Zackary then opened his mouth and faced the plate that had more, essentially making the > symbol with his mouth. I loved the way the game used the analogy of an open mouth looking for the most food to explain the concept.

I also played a game of Alike or Not with Benjamin and I was so impressed by how quickly he grasped the concept of matching. Like most of the games in the collection, it used items from around the house as props, namely, socks. Benjamin quickly caught onto the idea of the game and I loved the fact that this fun matching game was building some fundamental mathematical skills!

Overall, Carlito C. Caterpillar’s MathHouse Game Card Set was a great way not just to increase my sons’ math skills but also to see how much they already knew. Zackary has a very good grasp of numbers and it was so much fun to work with him on some of the other basic math concepts such as addition and subtraction. If you’re looking for a fun way to introduce your child to the world of math, this engaging set of games is a great way to start. It’s a fun, easy and low-pressure way to learn about mathematics!
