Painting Jobs are Easier with the Roll & Stow System-Giveaway

November 18, 2014 by Kathryn 101 Comments

If there’s one thing I’ve gained a lot of experience with in the last few years, it’s home renovations. And painting always seems to be a big part of that. Since buying the house in which I was raised, almost every room has been renovated and painted. The kitchen, bathroom, living room and both boys’ bedrooms are now clean and modern with fresh paint and new flooring.

Having done so much work on the house, I know how messy and frustrating painting can be. In fact, I painted the entire living room by myself and it was a job that took days to complete. The results were fantastic, but there was a lot of mess to clean up afterwards. I couldn’t help but think there had to be a better way and luckily for me, now there is: the Roll & Stow!

Parents and Little Girls Will Both Love the Eco-Friendly Nail Polish from Piggy Paint-Giveaway

November 3, 2013 by Kathryn 189 Comments

One of the gifts that almost every little girl gets excited about is makeup, since it gives younger girls a chance to feel like grown-ups. But so many sets designed for little girls feature cheap, harsh cosmetics that don’t work well and contain questionable ingredients. That’s why I’ve been a long-time fan of Piggy Paint when I’m shopping for my nieces or any other little girls.

Piggy Paint offers kid-friendly nail polishes that are non-toxic, hypoallergenic and eco-friendly. But despite the gentle, water-based formula, the polish still dries to a hard durable finish, so even though it’s ideal for children, it’s a great choice for adults as well!

Tackling Home Renovations with Help from Canadian Tire-Giveaway

October 18, 2013 by Kathryn 333 Comments

One of my favourite things about being a homeowner is updating the look of my home, and with a house that’s over a century old, there is a lot to be updated! Room by room, I have been tackling projects and modernizing the look of my house, and recently Canadian Tire gave me the chance to update one of the rooms that I’ve been longing to tackle for months…my living room.

living room renovation before
This was the living room before the renovation. Since it was in pretty rough shape, I just covered it in kids’ artwork as I pleased!

The living room is fairly small, like most rooms in the house. The floor was covered with the same carpet that had been in the house when I was born, making it about 35 years old. Half the walls were drywall but the other half were still lathe and plaster. The room had been painted back when I was a teenager, but the beige shade was outdated and overall look of the room was rather haphazard and old fashioned. I couldn’t wait to tackle the job and turn the room into a comfortable and modern area for spending time with my boys.

Canadian Tire supplied me with a new power drill and an assortment of supplies to upgrade the look of my room and I couldn’t wait to get started. Since I was doing all the work myself, I decided to tackle the room one wall at a time rather than try to do too much at once. It was the right decision, because even repairing the damage to the existing walls was quite a job! But as soon as the first wall was washed, repaired, sanded and painted, I could tell that the work was going to be well worth it. The change in the look of the room was phenomenal!

Quick Tips for Tackling Big Summer Chores #HealthyFamilies

July 21, 2012 by Kathryn 8 Comments

My family has been having a great time enjoying the outdoors now that summer is here, but July doesn’t just bring summer fun, it also brings summer cleaning! There are some chores that are best done when the weather gets warm and as much as I would rather be enjoying the sunshine, I know that I have to take some time to get important summer cleaning done too!

Our biggest summer job is usually steam-cleaning the carpets. After the mud and muck of spring, our poor old living room carpet is always in especially bad shape so giving it a thorough cleaning is an essential summer task. Two big tips for steam-cleaning carpets in the summer? First, wait for a low-humidity day if possible. If not, plan on steam-cleaning your carpets in the morning and then leaving the house for the day while they dry. And to help ensure that any remaining odour-causing bacteria has been destroyed, give your wet carpets a good spray with a fabric deodorizer like Lysol Fabric Refresher after cleaning. When the carpets dry, they’ll look and smell fabulous! [Read more…]

Breeze Through Your Painting Projects with a Little Help From SHUR-LINE-Giveaway

March 20, 2012 by Kathryn 85 Comments

shur-line products in useLiving in a century-old house means that we are always renovating and as a result, we do a lot of painting compared to most families. In fact, since we bought my childhood home almost two years ago, we’ve painted practically every room in the original part of the house. And with an unfinished addition to make liveable as well, we’re going to have a lot of painting in our future too!

For the most part, it’s an easy job. But high ceilings, awkward corners and messy cleanup can make painting more challenging. That’s why I was thrilled when I got the chance to check out some of the brand painting products from SHUR-LINE. These painting supplies are designed to make painting a fun and easy experience and I couldn’t wait to see what they were like.

shur-line extendable paint poleThe first product that caught my eye was the clever SHUR-LINE Easy Release Roller Cover Frame. There’s nothing that exciting about most paint rollers, but this one really was something special. It featured a clever easy release trigger to minimize mess when changing rollers. I just pulled the lever and the roller popped out so that I could remove it quickly and cleanly. And the ergonomic handle made painting so comfortable!

The SHUR-LINE Extendable Paint Pole was just as handy, and an especial favourite with my husband. The pole screwed into the bottom of the Easy Release Roller Cover Frame in seconds to create a thirty-inch pole to reach higher areas. And by pressing a button on the top of the pole, I could extend the pole even further. With five different extension lengths up to a maximum of sixty inches, this was a tool that was perfect for our high-walled living room. And my husband loved the fact that he could paint ceilings so easily now!

shur-line edgerThe final SHUR-LINE product we received was the Edger. This clever hand-held painting tool was the one that I found the most useful and I fell in love with it almost immediately. My husband has a steady hand and has no problem carefully painting around doors and windows or along the bottoms and tops of walls. I, on the other hand, am notorious for messing up these areas and smearing paint on baseboards and casings. But with the SHUR-LINE Edger, those days were finally behind me! I simply had to lift the plastic guides at the top of the edger, dip the pad into my paint, click the guides back down again and then follow the edges of doors, windows, baseboards and ceilings with the front of the Edger. And just like that, I could create the perfect edge I’d always wanted!

Painting was never something that we minded too much; seeing each room improve as we worked on it was well worth the time and effort. But now the experience has become even more enjoyable thanks to these great new painting tools from SHUR-LINE. If you have home renovations in your future, SHUR-LINE is sure to make the job easier. Check the tools out for yourself and give your house a fresh look for spring!
