Welcoming Warm Weather with a #MyWhishParty Spring Celebration

April 9, 2014 by Kathryn 41 Comments

A few months ago, I discovered the Canadian party supply store Whish, and any special occasion has become a whole lot easier ever since. I first had the opportunity to create an easy and elegant Valentine’s Day tablescape with the company’s Romantic Table for Two Ambiance Kit, and the stylish accessories and sleek disposable dinnerware made the process so easy. But Whish wanted me to see for myself how any occasion could become a special one with a little help from its extensive inventory of party supplies, so the company gave me the chance to throw my own party too, with any theme that I wanted!

Having just lived through an especially long and cold winter, the foremost thoughts in my mind were of sunshine, green grass and flowers. But even near the end of March, the snow just kept falling. So I decided to celebrate spring a different way instead…with a Welcome Spring party for my boys! Whish loved the idea and helped me put together decorations and accessories that would be sure to have my boys and their friends feeling warmer.

Anna’s Budget Tips-How to Save on Kids’ Birthday Parties

August 1, 2013 by Kathryn 9 Comments

It’s only natural for moms to be excited about the little ones’ (or no-so-little-anymore ones’…) birthdays. These annual milestones are a reminder of the amazing people our kids are turning into and how much they’ve grown, learned and changed since the last birthday. And that’s certainly a cause for celebration! But…it’s all too easy to let the festivities get way out of control.

Does it really take a bouncy house, pony rides, popcorn machine, full suite of coordinated printed products, character appearances, a magician and overflowing goody bags to mark the passing of another year? Here is some advice for throwing a fun birthday party on a budget.

Pick a theme.

Having a central idea to build the party around keeps it fun and exciting and also helps you to focus in on a few special ideas in a “sky’s the limit” world. This also helps make the party more personal when the theme is something your child loves. A few ideas:

  • A favourite pastime such as soccer, baseball, dance, gymnastics or swimming.
  • A beloved character from a TV show, movie or video game.
  • A fantasy theme such as princesses, fairies, pirates, cowboys & cowgirls, outer space or mermaids.
  • A theme centred around the party activities – movie night, camp-out or makeover party.

Get Creative with a DIY Super Mario Bros. Birthday Party

June 9, 2012 by Kathryn 14 Comments

Last weekend we celebrated Zackary’s sixth birthday. He requested a Super Mario Bros. birthday party and I have to confess, I put off planning it a little longer than I should have; I had some potential reviews of birthday party supplies that ended up not working out so when he asked me exactly one week before his birthday, “Mom, am I even going to HAVE a party?” I knew it was time to get in gear!

With a limited budget and only a week to plan, I turned to Google to get some Super Mario party ideas. First, I printed off some free Mario-themed invitations from Personalized Party Invites. Rather than leave anybody out, I just invited every boy in Zackary’s class; thirteen in all.

Next on the agenda…games! I found two fun and free printable games online: Mario Bingo (download it here) and Pin the Moustache on the Mario. Then, to make sure that the baker’s dozen of little boys that would be coming burnt off some of their energy, I drew spots on a dozen eggs so that the boys could have a Yoshi Egg Race!
