Kids Love Getting Creative with Klutz Jr. Craft Kits-Giveaway

January 31, 2017 by Kathryn 122 Comments

When I was in my early twenties, I decided I wanted to learn to knit. I found a Klutz craft book, a series I’d loved as a teen, with step-by-step instructions, a set of knitting needles and even a yarn needle for sewing. A few weeks later, I’d made a scarf, a purse and even a little knitted rabbit toy! I’ve always thought Klutz books are a great choice for bringing out creativity for kids, teens and even adults in all kinds of ways and recently, the collection of craft books expanded to include a brand-new line for younger children four and up.

Klutz Jr. books and craft kits are perfect for smaller children that want to unleash their inner creativity and contain everything needed to create fun and unique crafts. So far, the Klutz Jr. collection consists of four fun-filled kits: My Sparkly Tiaras, My Clay Critters, My Egg Carton Animals and My Hand Art. I received a set of the four new titles to review for myself and with my boys home last Friday for a teacher’s development day, the timing was perfect to sit down and get creative with them!

June 13, 2014 by Kathryn 22 Comments

Father’s Day is this weekend and Scholastic Canada is celebrating with some great books that illustrate that special bond between a dad and his kids. I received a few of Scholastic Canada’s newest books featuring dear old dad to review and they are a great choice for little ones this Father’s Day!

Mighty Dads by Joan Holub is a great choice for boys since it features loveable construction vehicle characters. Illustrated by James Dean, the creator of Pete the Cat, this book’s inspirational story about the ways fathers share life lessons with their children is sure to make Dad smile. And kids will love the message that no matter where their talents lie, their dads are proud of them! [Read more…]

Welcome Spring with New Picture Books from Scholastic Canada

April 15, 2013 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

Even though spring is officially here, the weather here in Saskatchewan hasn’t let my boys get outside as much as I would like. In fact, we woke up to a snowstorm this morning! With wintry weather keeping us indoors more than we might like, I’m very grateful to have all kinds of fun indoor puzzles, games and, my personal favourite, books! Recently Scholastic Canada sent us some of the newest titles for spring and the boys and I have had a great time reading them together on chilly days!

exclamation mark coverExclamation Mark by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

This book is so clever and a lot of fun to read. As the name suggests, there’s the opportunity to yell a bit when reading! The fitting personalities of the punctuation marks in the book, from periods to question marks, make it a fun and witty story for adults and it’s a great introduction to punctuation for kids learning to read. We had a great time learning about the little Exclamation Mark discovering his purpose and both boys were shouting along by the end! [Read more…]

Fall Picture Books from Scholastic Make Reading Fun for Everyone

September 23, 2012 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

One of my favourite things about public school is Scholastic book orders. I used to love looking through the flyers when I was a child and now every month Zackary brings home a book order that the two of us can peruse together. I have to admit, I sometimes will even buy a book for myself after choosing books for him!

This fall, Scholastic Canada has some great fun book choices for younger children and I was so excited when we received three of the new fall pictures books from Scholastic to review.

the-very-hungry-bear coverAs soon as I saw The Very Hungry Bear, the newest picture book from Nick Bland, I knew we would be reading that one first. My boys love his previous books and so we sat down together to check out the new story. The tale of a hungry bear that went fishing and found a lost polar bear was so much fun and both the boys enjoyed it. And I appreciated the theme the story had of helping those in need, even if it means going without something yourself! [Read more…]

Summer Reading is Fun with Scholastic Canada

June 26, 2012 by Kathryn Leave a Comment

One of the ways that I keep my boys busy during the summer is with books and this year Scholastic Canada has some great choices for preschoolers and young school-age children. I received Some Dads and Zoe Gets Ready to review recently and my boys and I sat down to read them together.

some dads cover artSince Father’s Day had just passed, we decided to read Some Dads by Nick Bland first. This simple rhyming picture book has fun illustrations of animal dads and their children. From sporty dads to loud dads, every child is sure to find a dad described in the book that reminds them of their own father. My boys loved the pictures and especially enjoyed the “naughty dad,” who thought it was okay to throw water balloons in the house! [Read more…]
