Enjoy the Dairy-Free Goodness of Almonds and Cashews with New Happy Planet Nut Smoothies-Giveaway

February 4, 2016 by Kathryn 167 Comments

I’ve always been a little bit nuts for nuts. Cracking whole assorted nuts and eating them right out the shell has been a Christmas tradition in our house since I was a child. And whether I’m making a flavourful vegetarian curry or a batch of tasty homemade chocolates, adding nuts just makes food better. But the best part is that nuts are a great source of so many essential nutrients too!

Now Happy Planet, a proudly Canadian company that makes some of my very favourite fresh soups, is bringing the goodness of nuts to its new line of smoothies! Just in time to help you stick to your newly formed healthy eating and exercise habits, these smoothies comes in four delicious flavours and are packed with all the goodness of almonds and cashews! I recently received the new smoothies to test out for myself and I couldn’t wait to try them all.

The smoothies are available in Coffee, Vanilla Chai, Salted Caramel and Chocolate flavours and can be purchased in both large 900ml bottles and individual-sized 325ml bottles. I opened a single-serve Salted Caramel and took a sip. Immediately, I knew I’d found my new favourite snack for those mid-afternoon slumps! The caramel flavour was fantastic and the smoothie had a great creamy texture that made it hard to believe it was both dairy and soy free! [Read more…]

Serve Your Drinks In Style this Summer with New Drinking Mugs and Lid Sets from Bernardin-Giveaway

July 16, 2014 by Kathryn 230 Comments

Every year in the late summer and early fall, I find a way to preserve the extra vegetables and fruit that I grow in my garden or get from the local market gardens and most of the time, I do that by canning. From my family’s favourite plum jam made with plums from the tree in our back yard to pickled beets made with the surplus of fresh beets I grow in the garden, there are all kinds of tasty and delicious ways to make sure we can enjoy the bounty of summer all year long.

And when it’s time to start canning, I’ve always trusted Bernardin for high-quality canning supplies including mason jars, pectin, lids and canners. But this year, there’s no reason to wait for autumn to enjoy Bernardin! The company has recently come out with some fun new products perfect for cooling down on a hot summer day.

My personal favourite is the adorable new Bernardin Drinking Mugs. Everyone knows there’s nothing trendier than serving food or drinks in canning jars and these new mugs from Bernardin make that even easier! While I’ve been using them for beverages so far, I also think they’d be perfect for serving a salad or a dessert at an outdoor party. Guests will enjoy the stylishness of the presentation, and the handle on the jar makes eating the food even easier! [Read more…]

Five Sneaky Ways to Make Your Family’s Smoothies Healthier

July 16, 2014 by Kathryn

There’s nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than a smoothie, and with so much fresh fruit and ice in each one, they’re a healthy choice too! But I like to find ways to make smoothies even healthier and to make sure my boys drink their smoothies too, I sometimes have to be sneaky about it!

Luckily, there are a few great foods that can be added to smoothies to boost their health, yet don’t affect the taste, so adults and kids alike can get extra nutrition without even knowing it! Here are my top five sneaky ways to make smoothies healthier:

Ground Flax

With some studies finding evidence this tiny seed may reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, ground flax is one of my all-time favourite additions to any meal. In fact, I love flax seed whole too but for optimal digestion and to ensure it can’t be tasted in a smoothie, ground flax is the better choice. Just a teaspoon in your drink will add omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidant-rich lignans and two essential types of fibre to your diet!
