The Microsoft Surface 3 Tablet Makes #MicrosoftMarchBreak Fun for Everyone

March 24, 2016 by Kathryn 9 Comments

surface 3 tablet

With two active boys and a fairly small townhouse home, finding fun activities for kids during March Break isn’t always easy. Ideas that are engaging, creative and appropriate for the whole family can be tough for me to think up! This year, MicrosoftStore.ca offered to help by lending me its fabulous Surface 3 tablet along with a list of five fun scavenger hunt activities designed to keep my kids entertained all week, and I couldn’t wait to take part!

The Surface 3 is a high-quality tablet so I was a little bit nervous about letting my energetic boys get their hands on it at first. But it really is designed to be a family tablet…and in some ways, a substitute for a home computer too! We sat down together to check out the scavenger hunt activities and get started on our tasks, while learning more about the Surface 3 at the same time!

The LeapFrog #LeapTV is a Holiday Gift that Gets Kids Moving and Learning #LeapFrogMomSquad

November 20, 2015 by Kathryn 7 Comments

My boys love gaming systems and while I understand the appeal (I’m a bit of a gamer myself), I don’t like how long they sometimes spend sitting and staring blankly at the television. As for the games themselves, some have cleverly incorporated educational content into the games, but others provide almost no intellectual benefit. So what’s a mom with two game-crazy kids to do?

Turn to the LeapFrog LeapTV, of course! My boys have had LeapFrog hand-held gaming systems for years now and I’ve seen for myself how effectively the systems combine fun and learning. Now, LeapTV is taking the benefits one step further with a gaming system that’s designed to get kids moving as they play and learn!

Experience Affordable Connectivity with Smartphones and Tablets from Alcatel OneTouch-Giveaway

January 29, 2015 by Kathryn 307 Comments

With my oldest soon turning nine, I’ve realized that it will likely soon be time to find him a cell phone of his own. For the moment he gets by without one just fine since we live in a small town. He can walk or bike anywhere he needs to go, he knows the house number if he needs to call me while he’s out and his circle of friends is small enough that the parents all have each other’s phone numbers anyways.

But soon Zackary will be reaching the point at which a smartphone becomes a device for social interaction as much as for phone calls. Texting is a huge communication form for his generation and not being able to join in means that he will potentially be left out of activities planned through text. And as if that wasn’t enough of a motivation, my boys and I are moving later in the year as well. Zackary doesn’t really need a phone in a town as small as ours, but our new home is going to be in a significantly bigger area.

The problem, of course, is that even though I know my kids having phones one day is inevitable, I’m not willing to spend hundreds of dollars on one. As careful as my oldest son is with his electronics, I know how easy it is for accidents to happen and the idea of having to replace an expensive smartphone for my child just doesn’t sit well with me. That’s why I was so excited to learn that Alcatel OneTouch, one of the top ten phone manufacturers in the world, had recently come to Canada. [Read more…]

Put the Phone Down and Enter #HolidayMode this Christmas with TELUS

December 22, 2014 by Kathryn 69 Comments

Running a website, it goes without saying that I’m on my phone a lot. But if ever there was a time to put down the phone and focus on the present, it’s during the holidays. And this year my amazing phone company TELUS challenged me and a few of my friends to put down our phones and enjoy catching up on life at a festive lunch as we entered “Holiday Mode.”

The mission was simple. All our phones went in the middle of the table and were off limits until the end of the meal. And as a reward for shutting off and catching up, TELUS footed the bill! I headed out with a few of the fellow mothers that I visit with at the boys’ activities and prepared for some tech-free quality time!

Maximize Your Home WiFi Experience with the NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Smart WiFi Router

September 4, 2014 by Kathryn 6 Comments

It took me a lot of time to realize the difference that a great router makes in a home network, but once I did, I never used the cheap router given to me by my Internet provider again. And a few months ago, I got the chance to boost my Internet’s performance significantly with the fabulous NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 Smart WiFi Router.

Now, NETGEAR is at it again with a router that boasts top-of-the-line performance and speed, going above and beyond any other router I’ve ever experienced. The NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 AC3200 Smart WiFi Router is the Cadillac of routers and I was so excited when the company sent me one to test out for myself.

What first won my heart about NETGEAR was the company’s easy installation process thanks to the NETGEAR genie. The step-by-step walkthrough always helps me get my new technology up and running in a flash and this time was no exception. The NETGEAR genie also provides some handy performance features such as making any printer connected to the modem AirPrint compatible. Being able to use an iPhone to print any time without having to install apps or connect to a PC is such a great timesaver! [Read more…]
