The Delta Bessborough in Saskatoon – A Family Vacation at the Castle on the River

It has been years since I have had a proper family vacation. It’s one of those things that we seem to plan for every year, but never actually get around to doing. So I felt incredibly spoiled this year when I got to enjoy not just one, but two family getaways! The first was a camping trip organized by my sister and her husband and I loved spending time with my extended family in the great outdoors. But the second vacation was the true treat for me: a three-day getaway at the gorgeous Delta Bessborough Hotel in Saskatoon, SK courtesy of Delta Hotels.

When Delta Hotels contacted me about the possibility of reviewing the hotel, I was elated. The Delta Bessborough is no ordinary hotel. Built in 1931, it is truly a piece of history and setting foot in the “castle on the river” is like stepping back in time. The hotel is stunning; there really is no other word to describe it.

The Delta Bessborough has a number of promotions and one of the best is that visitors coming to Saskatoon can enjoy one of the many fabulous events that the city hosts and then provide their event receipt to the Delta Bessborough to receive a special discounted room rate! I was given the chance to choose tickets to one of Saskatoon’s many special events as part of my review and there were tons of tempting options to choose from.

I knew my husband and oldest son would enjoy the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series event more than almost anything else, but I wasn’t too confident about Benjamin being able to last through the race. Personally, the great music festivals like The Saskatchewan Jazz Festival and Folkfest were the events that attracted me the most, but I knew my kids wouldn’t be quite as thrilled about attending the festivals as me. Eventually I decided to choose an event that is always a hit with parents and kids alike: The Saskatoon Exhibition.

The rooms were booked and Delta handled all the details, right down to arranging to have the tickets to the Saskatoon Exhibition waiting for us when we arrived at the hotel. For weeks after the plans were made, I thought of little else. Finally, the big day arrived and we set out to make the two-hour drive to Saskatoon, SK.

When we arrived at the hotel, my husband and sons were just as excited as I was. Zackary can be a little hard to handle when he’s overstimulated but the staff at the Delta Bessborough were completely accommodating. The website had mentioned that the hotel welcomed children, but every mother knows that that’s a much easier thing to say than it is to do. The Delta Bessborough really followed through on their statement every step of the way. The staff was so considerate of my boys and were equally adept at successfully managing Zackary’s zealousness and Benjamin’s shyness. I really felt like they enjoyed and cared about my kids, rather than just tolerating them. The boys even got fun age-appropriate goodie bags when we checked in!

While we spent the next two days enjoying the shows and rides at the Saskatoon Exhibition, we also spent quite a bit of time in the hotel. Our room happened to be in one of the sections of the hotel that featured a turret so we had an extra little hideaway space in the room and an extra window. The furniture fit right in with the style of the hotel and I felt positively princess-like working at the ornate desk in the room!

But for all its historic charm, the Delta Bessborough features all the comforts of the modern age as well. From free Wi-Fi and high speed Internet in every room to the beautiful pool and fitness room to flat-screen televisions with on-demand movies and video games, the old-world rooms had all the conveniences I could have asked for.

While the room itself was provided by Delta Hotels, we dipped into our own funds to test out the hotel’s unique Samurai restaurant. The restaurant features Teppanyaki style dining, where a chef prepares and cooks food for everyone right at the table. It was my first time dining in this manner and my husband and I had such a fun time! Zackary and Benjamin were a little rambunctious but the waitress was incredibly patient and even brought them little samples of all the things that we ate so they could try the food out too. And best of all, at a Delta Hotel, kids six and under eat for free!

Overall, our stay at the Delta Bessborough was so luxurious and yet still so family-friendly. Travelling with kids is always challenging, but Delta Hotels really helped to make our trip as pleasant and stress-free as possible. And the stunning atmosphere of the hotel is something I’ll look back on fondly for months to come!
