As much as my boys love fancy, electronic toys and games, it’s invariably the more simple and classic activities that become their favourites. I love seeing how much Zackary and Benjamin enjoy sitting down to play a board game or act out a story with their favourite toys and I always love finding new games that seem like a good fit for my boys.
Recently Blue Orange Games sent me two of its beautiful wooden games to review and even as children’ games go, they were something special. We received Froggy Boogie and Zimbbos! to review and the boys were absolutely giddy about playing with the brightly coloured wooden pieces.
They decided to play Froggy Boogie first and the skill level of this game was just right for a preschooler and Grade One child to play together. The game combines chance with memory as baby frogs race around lily pads and try to avoid being caught by the adult frogs. The boys rolled the two coloured dice, chose the adult frog with the same two colours and then flipped over one of his eyes. If the underside had a frog on it, the baby frog had been spotted and couldn’t move forward. If it was blank, the baby could jump onto the next lily pad!
I liked the way this game encouraged memory skills as it progressed. Benjamin didn’t quite get the concept of remembering which eye had the little frog on it, but Zackary caught on very quickly and was soon getting excited when he rolled the right colours for a frog he remembered. Both boys had so much fun playing the game and thanks to the sturdy wooden pieces, it’s one they’ll be able to enjoy for years to come.
Next the boys took out Zimbbos, a fun circus-themed balancing game. The goal was to stack up all ten elephants without the pieces falling. To make the game more challenging, five wild card animal and three balancing bars allowed for more building creativity. The boys rolled the die and depending on the result, were able to add between one and three elephants or their choice of a wild card piece or a balance bar to their pyramid.
There was so much that I loved about this game especially for a younger child like Benjamin. It let him practice his counting skills. It helped develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills. And when the boys decided they were tired of playing the game using the die, the game pieces could be used to build random structures just for fun.
Blue Orange Games loves helping kids play, so the company is very generously offering one lucky Mommy Kat and Kids reader their choice of either Froggy Boogie or Zimbbos, a $30 value! To enter to win, just leave a blog comment about which game you would choose for your children!
