Laundry is one of those things that almost every busy mom somewhat dreads, and I am no exception. No sooner have I worked my way through the mountain of clothes in the basket than my boys decide that putting on three layers of their best clothes and jumping in mud puddles is a really, really good idea.
Of course, the twenty-year-old washer and dryer I was using didn’t make the job any easier, so when Maytag gave me a chance to discover that laundry didn’t have to be a chore by participating in the Maytag Mayhem Blogger Challenge, I absolutely leapt at the chance.
The challenge started with the delivery of a brand new Maytag Maxima XL Front Load Steam Laundry Pair and before these stylish units were even installed, I could tell that they were something special. With features including 12-hour Fresh Hold, Steam for Stains, PowerWash cleaning, Allergen Removal cycles and Wrinkle Prevent options, these machines were designed to make laundry a pleasure instead of a chore!
Once the machines were installed, it was time for my first challenge to begin. The mission? To wash four varied loads of laundry using the different cycles to see how the Maytag Maxima XL Steam Laundry Pair made washing and drying clothes quicker and easier.
Load One: The Black Load
This load of clothing had plenty of my favourite clothes including my best black sweater, two of my fanciest black dresses and a pair of black dress pants. This was a big load of clothing that was absolutely filthy owing to a lot of recent travelling and while I want these clothes clean, I also want them treated gently. I chose the PowerWash setting for washing as it is especially designed for thoroughly cleaning large loads with a built-in water heater and a thorough rinse for removing stains. At over two hours estimated wash time, it was a longer wash cycle than I was used to and I was excited to test it.
A few things about the washer caught my attention as soon as I added the clothes and started adjusting the settings. The customizability on this machine is amazing! My small town has very hard water, so when I saw the Maytag Maxima XL Front Load Steam Washer let me select the hardness of the water, the soil level and the water temperature to optimize the wash cycle, I was absolutely thrilled.
When the clothes were clean, I tossed them into the dryer. I have to admit; I don’t usually machine dry my dress clothes. I hang them to dry instead to ensure that they stay in great shape and don’t wrinkle. I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of fear as I tossed my favourite pieces of clothing into the dryer and chose the Wrinkle Control setting. But when I pulled the clothes out just 33 minutes later, the clothes were perfectly dry and didn’t have a single wrinkle!
Load Two: The Rainbow Load
This batch of brightly coloured clothing was mostly comprised of my boys’ favourite t-shirts and some of my own bright shirts, tank tops and dresses. I decided on the Normal setting for washing this load and the total wash time was just 59 minutes, significantly less than when washing the black clothing on the PowerWash setting. I used a laundry detergent pod to wash this load of clothing and tossing in the pod, shutting the door and starting the machine couldn’t have been easier.
When the time came to dry the clothes, I decided to test out the Quick Dry setting. My jaw dropped when I saw that the setting took just 18 minutes. Surely there was no way my clothes would actually be dry after such a short cycle! But when the time had elapsed, the t-shirts and tank tops were perfectly dry. Now that’s a feature a busy mom can appreciate!
Load Three: The Bedding Load
From the moment the Maytag Maxima XL Front Load Steam Laundry Pair entered the house, I had been itching to test out the Bedding settings on the washer and dryer. My previous appliances hadn’t had the capacity of these sleek new machines, so I had always had to wash the comforter and sheets separately. I carried the bedding down to the washing machine, tossed it in, turned the dial to the Bedding setting and started the machine. In just over an hour, the sheets and comforter were fresh and clean.
Then I popped the load into the dryer and chose the Bedding setting again. As with the previous load of laundry, I was flabbergasted to see how short the estimated drying time was. I had needed about two hours to dry sheets and a comforter together in my old machine. The Bedding cycle on the Maytag Maxima XL He Steam Dryer was just 55 minutes long! And when the machine finished the cycle, the bedding was dry and I was in heaven. I’ve always dreaded washing the bedding for our household and now I can’t wait to get the boys’ sheets and blankets washed too!
Load Four: The Everything Load
Let’s face it. In a busy household, there are sometimes days when Mom needs her white blouse, Dad needs those filthy jeans he uses for working outdoors and the kids need their soccer shirts…and those are the only clothes that need to be washed. To test out the Maytag Maxima XL appliances’ effectiveness at washing a completely random load of clothing, I tossed an assortment of clothes together to wash at the same time.
Included in this load, among other things, were a few pairs of the boys’ very dirty socks, a fancy lace-trimmed white tank top, studded cut-off jean shorts, my favourite hoodie and a blue velvet dress top. I put the clothes into the machine at night and decided to try the Overnight Wash and Dry setting. This setting does just what it says it does: washes and dries a small load of clothing right in the washing machine. Unfortunately, the load that I chose was a little too large to fully dry the clothing, so I’m looking forward to testing out this feature on a smaller load over the next few days.
The next morning, I put the assorted load into the dryer and chose the normal setting with the optional Wrinkle Prevent added since the load included an easily wrinkled cotton dress. The cycle lasted for 38 minutes and at the end of it, the dress really was unwrinkled! I have to admit, I was surprised. Some clothing is just prone to bad wrinkling and this dress happened to be one such item, so pulling it out of a very mixed load of clothing and finding it virtually wrinkle-free was a delightful surprise.
At the end of this challenge, I am sold on the timesaving effectiveness of the Maytag Maxima XL Front Load Steam Laundry Pair. The Wrinkle Prevent option is a huge timesaver for me since I no longer have to worry about ironing clothes after they’re laundered. The Quick Dry setting is perfect for those busy days when my boys or I need an item of clothing right away. And the Bedding setting makes washing those blankets and sheets absolutely foolproof!
