As somebody that loves to cook, I have a passion for food and choosing a favourite meal is no easy task for me. But there are a few dishes that I especially love and one of those is a thick and juicy ribeye steak cooked on the barbeque. The rich taste of beef is one that almost everyone loves and when it’s prepared just right, it’s irresistible.
Because beef is such a popular food, it’s always fun to find new ways to use it in meals and recipes. And to help with that, Canadian Beef has created a fabulous new app called The Roundup, available for iOS and Android systems. While the app does feature some tasty recipes, that’s just the start of the useful information it has available!
From safe food handling to different preparation methods to the various cuts of beef, this app has so much useful information for any fan of Canadian Beef. I downloaded it for my iPhone and within minutes I was learning more about the best ways to store, cook and serve various beef cuts.
My personal favourite section was the Beef Storage information in the Safe Food Handling section. It featured the estimated maximum length of time that various cuts of beef should be stored in the refrigerator or freezer. While steaks and roasts can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days, it’s recommended that ground beef be kept in the fridge for no longer than a day. And I was surprised and pleased to see that roasts can be kept in the freezer for up to 12 months!
I also liked the Beef Cuts section, which let me find a specific cut of meat, view the recommended cooking method for that cut and then research recipes using that cooking method. I decided to really put the app to the test by buying one of my favourite cuts of meat and using it to create one of the recipes featured on the app.
I found some beautiful flank steak at the grocery store and after using the app to determine the best cooking method I decided to make the Carne Asada recipe. Our family loves Mexican food but the standard tacos and burritos don’t really have gourmet appeal. I couldn’t wait to shake things up with these tortillas filled with tender strips of seasoned steak and other tasty fillings.
The marinade was quick and easy to make, and while most of the ingredients were ones I’ve used many times before, the Chipotle Chili Powder was a new ingredient to me. As soon as I opened the bottle, I fell in love with the smoky spice and it’s one I’ll be incorporating into many recipes from now on. Because it was winter, I used an indoor grill to cook my steak, which usually doesn’t provide as authentic of a barbeque flavour. But the chili powder solved that problem by lending its smoky taste to the cooked meat. I was dreaming of summer as it cooked!
The finished meal was absolutely delicious and a great way of using a flank steak. I made sure to slice the steak against the grain for added tenderness and the results were fabulous. This recipe was a great way of taking our love of Mexican food to another level while enjoying delicious Canadian Beef at the same time!
From Beef Buying Tips to Nutrition and Health information, The Roundup is an app that’s a must for anyone that loves their beef. I’ve learned so much already about which cuts of beef are the most tender, what beef products I should choose if I’m trying to save money and which cooking methods are most appropriate for the beef I have in the fridge. And best of all, it’s free! If you can’t get enough Canadian Beef, download the app for your iPhone or Android device and see how you can increase your love of beef even more!
