My 4 Simple Tips for Minimizing Household Waste #SCJZeroWaste

December 1, 2015 by Kathryn 103 Comments

I’m pretty proud of the minimal waste our family of four produces, but I’m always looking for ways that we can throw out even less and minimize our impact on the environment. A few weeks ago, I committed to taking part in the #SCJZeroWaste Challenge to see if I could cut down on the waste my family produces. While we didn’t manage to completely eliminate garbage, we did manage to cut it in half with ease! These are the four ways we minimized our household waste.

Composting

Living in an apartment, composting wasn’t really an option for us until recently. Luckily, we’ve since upgraded to a townhouse with a back yard, so putting a little bin in the back for organic waste was a simple and useful way to minimize our garbage. We eat a lot of fresh food, so this one simple addition to our routine reduced our waste by about 25 per cent! [Read more…]

GoGo SqueeZ Fruit Pouches are Great for Kids and the Environment-Giveaway

October 20, 2015 by Kathryn 82 Comments

While I know many parents dread packing lunches, I’ve never minded the job that much. And part of the reason for that is the fact that my boys are very easy to please when it comes to the meals and snacks I give them. A deli meat sandwich, a string cheese stick, pudding and a package of fruit snacks are almost all I need to keep them full and happy. Of course, no lunch is complete without a pureed fruit pouch as far as my kids are concerned!

I’d never tried the popular GoGo SqueeZ fruit pouches before, however, so when the company offered me the chance to test out the pouches and learn a little more about the company, I couldn’t resist. I received an assortment of GoGo SqueeZ flavours and a sleek green messenger bag to review and pulled out a box of GoGo SqueeZ Apple Grape for the next lunches I packed.

Take the #SCJZeroWaste Challenge and See How Small Changes Can Make a Difference

October 15, 2015 by Kathryn 20 Comments

Over the last few years, I’ve done a lot of work to minimize the waste that my household produces. It started with recycling my cardboard and plastic, and immediately I was amazed by how much waste I was keeping out of the garbage bin. Then I started composting and minimized the weekly garbage even more. Now, I’m taking things one step further by taking a tip from SC Johnson Canada and trying the Zero Waste Challenge!

SC Johnson Canada is committed to the environment and has not sent any waste to landfills since 2013. And with help from some of the company’s products, I’m going to be trying to do the same thing by minimizing the waste my family produces each week. Though ideally I’d like to see us produce no waste at all, I’m going to aim for not creating more than one small bag of waste each week. [Read more…]
