Depending on different circumstances, feeding my children a proper diet is something that can be incredibly easy or incredibly difficult. So many factors play a part in whether or not my boys are getting all the nutrients they need. For example, the surplus of fresh fruit and vegetables during summer means that our entire family has no trouble getting our seven to ten daily servings. But that’s definitely not the case in the winter!
One of the biggest challenges I run into in land-locked Saskatchewan is making sure our diet has an appropriate amount of omega-3 fatty acids. These acids, which are found in fish and seafood in high amounts, are important in the development of the brain, eyes and nerves and since the body doesn’t create them naturally the only way to ensure that you are getting enough is to carefully monitor your diet or to take a supplement. I don’t mind swallowing a pill but I knew that wasn’t something my boys would enjoy. Fortunately, Ascenta Health came to the rescue with a sensational new children’s product, NutraSea Kids.
This all-natural liquid omega-3 supplement is formulated with both EPA and DHA omega-3 as well as GLA omega-6 and vitamin D. When it arrived, I was eager to see what the boys would think of it. While it does have a kid-friendly berry flavour, it is also an oil product and I couldn’t help but be curious about how they would react to the texture. My four-year-old happily gulped up a teaspoon of the liquid and proclaimed it delicious. I was thrilled that he had enjoyed the supplement and gave my eighteen-month-old a half-teaspoon of his own expecting a similarly positive reaction.
I didn’t get it. Benjamin found the oily texture to be completely unappealing and his horrible faces as he attempted to get rid of the taste had the entire family in hysterics. But fortunately, since the supplement is in a liquid form, it can easily be added to all kinds of foods so that Benjamin can get the omega-3 fatty acids his developing brain needs without even knowing it! My favourite trick is to add it to a serving of yoghurt since Benjamin loves it and almost always eats the entire container. The mild berry flavour is a great complement to all kinds of snacks from smoothies to spreads and Benjamin has never hesitated to eat anything that I have mixed with the NutraSea Kids supplement. I have even added the liquid to a cup of juice with good results!
Ascenta Health also carries a variety of omega-3 liquid supplements for adults including a concentrated formula and a vegetarian option so that anyone can find the best omega-3 supplement for their busy lifestyles. This supplement is a great way to make sure that your children are getting the optimal nutrition for their growing minds, especially if you don’t care for fish or, like me, you live in an area where it can be incredibly expensive to buy. Zackary continues to take a teaspoon of the supplement every morning after taking his multivitamin and Benjamin continues to have his serving in his morning yoghurt, even though he doesn’t know that! NutraSea Kids is a great easy way to make sure your children have the nutrients they need every day and the liquid form makes it easy to serve in all kinds of different ways. Check it out for yourself!
