Discovery Girls Magazine and Fab Girls Books-Review and Giveaway

There is a lot of pressure on girls today to look, dress and act a certain way. I remember feeling like an outcast at school because my hair wasn’t the proper style or my jeans weren’t the proper brand and it is not a good feeling at all. I wish I could say that times have changed since I was a child but I still hear stories of the awful struggle so many girls have with confidence and self-esteem issues.

discovery girls magazine coverFortunately, there are a great number of resources girls have to help them learn the oh-so-important life lesson of how to be comfortable with who they are. I recently got to check out a fabulous magazine dedicated to the mission of inspiring girls to be themselves called Discovery Girls and I couldn’t wait.

I received the latest two copies of both the Discovery Girls original edition for girls 8 and up and Middle School edition for girls 11 and up as well as one of the great Fab Girls books, The Fab Girls Guide to Friendship Hardship, to review. The first thing I noticed about the magazine was the fact that it featured real girls on the cover. Discovery Girls travels to different cities and collects applications from everyday girls to find the most energetic and genuine young women to use for its cover. I loved the fact that even with the magazine’s cover Discovery Girls was inspiring girls to be themselves.

The content was just as positive and inspiring as the cover and I had a great time reading through the magazines. The original edition and Middle School edition contain much of the same content, with a few special features in each magazine that are designed especially for the magazine’s specific age group. I liked the idea of making the magazine accessible to a wider range of girls that way.

From fun crafts to tasty recipes to fashion tips, there was something for every girl in Discovery Girls. Of course, a good portion of the magazine is devoted to the two areas where so many girls struggle: friendships and self-image. From tips on conquering negative emotions to powerful features about dealing with peer pressure, the message in Discovery Girls is one so many girls need to hear, to always be proud of being yourself.

The Fab Girls Guide to Friendship Hardship is one of four great books in the Fab Girls collection from Discovery Girls and is one that any girl would find useful. From quizzes to help girls gauge their friendships to descriptions of various types of toxic friends to advice about how to achieve true popularity, this book is full of information that every girl should read. I appreciated the way that the book was laid out in an easy-to-read way with different topics and formats every few pages to keep the chapters interesting.

discovery girls 10-year collectors editionI also found that a great deal of the information was relevant even to an adult woman, such as the very fun Acts of Friendship A-Z with 26 different ways to show a good friend that you care or the Fabulous Friends are Everywhere section with descriptions of some of the wonderful friends that can be found in our lives. After all, even a grown woman needs at least one Wise Woman to turn to in times of trouble and one Guy Friend to get that unique male perspective on things!

I really enjoyed both the Discovery Girls magazines and the Fab Girls book I received and I can’t wait to read more of the positive and inspiring content that was “created by girls, for girls.” And with the special 10-Year Collector’s Edition coming out today, there will be even more great tween reading to enjoy! If you have a tween girl in the house, or even a young teenager (I caught my 13-year-old stepdaughter reading through both of the magazines I received) I highly recommend checking out Discovery Girls. The empowering magazine and informative books will help your child to walk tall and feel great about themselves. What parent doesn’t want that?

  1. They choose 12 readers a year to be in the magazine. My 10 year old got a subscription for a Christmas gift, and loves it.
