My love of natural products is something I’ve mentioned often in the past. Because I prefer wholesome and natural food, I’ve never even considered using artificial sweetener. I’ve always thought that it tasted awful and the more I learned about it, the more I started to believe that it was more damaging to the body than the sugar it was replacing.
So when I was asked if I would like to review the brand new line of Pure Via sweeteners, I was very hesitant. Before I even responded, I investigated the product to find out exactly how Pure Via was adding sweetness to foods without adding calories. The answer was an extract from the Stevia plant, a plant that has been used in South America for centuries, and after reading up on it a bit, I found myself actually eager to give the new Pure Via line a try.
Pure Via is currently available in three different forms. Pure Via packets add the same sweetness as two teaspoons of sugar and are fabulous for sweetening coffee, fruit or cereal. Pure Via Turbinado and Stevia Blend combines the Stevia sweetener with raw cane sugar for a sweetener that tastes great and has only five calories per packet. And Pure Via Granulated is especially designed to replace white sugar cup-for-cup in baked goods and recipes.
I tried the Pure Via sweetener in my coffee first. It had a slightly different taste than sugar and I would almost describe it as being earthy. The taste was good, but different than the regular white sugar I’m accustomed to using. I tried the Turbinado and Stevia Blend next and with that small amount of raw cane sugar added, I honestly couldn’t taste the Stevia sweetener in the blend at all. Over the next few days, I found that I became used to the taste and didn’t even notice the difference in my coffee. But what I loved most about the Pure Via sweetener is that, unlike both sugar and artificial sweetener, it has virtually no effect on blood sugar levels.
Pure Via is giving one lucky Mommy Kat and Kids reader a chance to be one of the first in Canada to try this new product line with a giveaway of a Pure Via gift basket worth $50! To enter to win, just leave a blog comment about whether or not you’ve ever heard of or used Stevia before.
With the weather so warm, I haven’t had a chance to try baking with Pure Via yet, but I’m eager to give it a try and see how it works. I am picky about my baking so I am anxious to see if it gives me the consistent results of sugar without the calories or the spike in my blood sugar. If you’re looking for a low-calorie sweetener but shy away from chemical-based products as I do, check out Pure Via and see what you think of this naturally-sourced alternative to sugar!
