With concerns about commercial sweeteners becoming more and more prevalent, one of the hottest new food and diet trends is using stevia-based sweeteners to replace sugar in everything from coffee to baked goods. Canada has a few different brands of stevia-based sweetener available and recently I received a fun iced tea prize pack so that I could test out Truvia, one of the new brands of sweeteners derived from stevia, for myself.
The reason a stevia-based sweetener is said to be better for the body than commercial artificial sweeteners is that it doesn’t cause a spike in blood sugar. Truvia sweeteners come in a variety of different packages including a 40-count box and 80-count box of sachets perfect for coffee, tea and cereal and a spoonable jar that works great for cooking and baking. The spoonable jar was my personal favourite; I loved the way I could flip open the top and scoop out as much as I needed.
As with my previous experiences with stevia-based sweetener, I found that I could notice a slight difference in taste compared to regular sugar, but it wasn’t unpleasant and didn’t have the bitter aftertaste that I always notice with commercial sweeteners. In a cup of coffee, the difference was slightly noticeable and in a pitcher of iced tea, I didn’t taste the Truvia at all.
Truvia has an assortment of fabulous recipes on the website that really show off the versatility of the product. What I like about granulated stevia-based sweeteners is that measuring the amount I need for baking, cooking or even just sweetening a pitcher of iced tea is virtually foolproof. And with summer in full swing, I’m going to be whipping up a pitcher of the Truvia White Sparkling Sangria this weekend! I love that I’ve finally discovered a sangria recipe that is made with white wine instead of red and the fact it’s naturally sweetened with Truvia is an added bonus!
To help you enjoy some summer refreshment, Truvia is very generously offering one lucky Mommy Kat and Kids reader a fabulous Truvia Iced Tea Prize Pack worth $40! To enter to win, just leave a blog comment about a recipe or a food that you’d love to try using Truvia sweetener!
Personally, for cooking, baking or sweetening drinks, I find I get the best results when I use a bit of real sugar and a bit of Truvia blended together. I get a taste I love and I appreciate knowing that the boys and I aren’t consuming the large amount of sugar we would be normally. Check out Truvia for yourself and minimize the sugar in your diet by replacing it with this naturally sourced stevia-based sweetener instead!

I already use Truvia in my coffee and oatmeal every day. I’ve never tried it as a sugar replacement in baking. But I would love to use it in place of sugar to make cookies.
3 close relatives with diabetes and I love baking muffins (esp banana and carrot)- would def try with truvia
I’d use it in my coffee mostly…but I’d probably test it out in a Banana Loaf or Cookie recipe. :)
