I love to cook and it’s something that I’ve been doing since I was old enough to knead bread dough with my mother and flip pancakes with my father. I was incredibly lucky to have parents that were willing to let me help in the kitchen and talented home chefs with knowledge to give. From my mother, I learned the logical process of following a recipe and the importance of exact measurements, essential skills for successful results when baking. From my father I learned the magic of randomly throwing together favourite ingredients to create a dish that was delicious and original. But something neither one taught me was the difference that proper kitchen equipment can make.
As a result, when I first moved out on my own, I bought a cheap non-stick cookware set and used it for almost a decade after. I eventually switched to a cheap stainless steel set that still wasn’t especially impressive. But finally I realized that sometimes, great food requires great equipment, and so I invested in some essentials including a fabulous set of cast iron frying pans and a set of copper saucier pots. My knives, however, were the same cheap ones that I bought along with my non-stick cookware and I was becoming more and more desperate for a really good knife. (Especially since the ones I had were starting to break!)
That’s when Cooking with Cutco came to my rescue and offered me the chance to review the absolutely stunning Kitchen Classics knife set. Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain insists that a large set of knives is a waste of money and that the only true essential knife in a kitchen is a high-quality chef knife, perhaps paired with a paring knife for creating intricate garnishes. This set provides both of those essentials along with a handy trimmer that will make short work of removing fat or skin from meat. I took one look at the set and was absolutely giddy to get cooking.
And when I decided to whip up a quick salad to serve with supper a few days later and pulled out the Cutco Petite Chef knife to chop a tomato, I almost swooned. Cutting into that tomato was like slicing through air; there was literally no resistance. In the coming days, I became more and more enraptured with the abilities of my new knives. A word of warning: if you are not used to high-quality knives like this, you WILL cut yourself at least a few times until you adjust to the fact that the knives cut so easily! Best of all, Cutco knives feature a lifetime guarantee, so I will still be able to depend on them to chop, slice and dice my creations even fifty years from now. Talk about fabulous value!
