For a Christmas gift that really gets kids excited, there’s just nothing better than a remote-controlled device. Last year, the Sphero took the holidays by storm with its innovative app-controlled design that let users control the toy’s movements with their smartphone. This year Orbotix, the company that created the Sphero, is at it again with the brand new Ollie app-controlled robot!
This toy is the newest innovation in app-controlled devices. Ollie is essentially designed in the same manner as a remote control car, but with a minimalist, futuristic design. The toy is controlled using an iOS or Android app via Bluetooth and has a range of up to thirty metres. That means my boys could send Ollie all over the house with ease!
Ollie charges using a USB connection and has a battery life of about sixty minutes, which is quite a bit longer than many of my boys’ remote-controlled toys. The spinning wheels on each end of the cylinder feature optional rubber grips to improve traction so that even on slick or uneven surfaces, Ollie just keeps cruising.
The driving app is fairly easy to use, essentially consisting of a joystick and a trackpad used to move Ollie around the room and to perform tricks. And once your child’s mastered the basics, there may be future skills to perfect as well because Orbotix has plans to release more apps for Ollie offering increased functionality for the device.
If you have a child that would love to spend Christmas morning playing with this toy, Orbotix wants to help make that dream come true! One lucky Mommy Kat and Kids reader is going to win their very own Ollie app-controlled robot, a $100 value! To enter to win, just leave a blog comment about who would be getting this toy if you won.
This toy is a great introduction to the world of app-controlled devices and kids will have a blast learning to manoeuvre and manipulate Ollie. Find the toy at stores across North America and let your kids race, learn stunts and show off the cool tricks they can do with nothing more than this little robot and a smartphone!
