Get Ready to Save More with Tips from Gail Vaz-Oxlade and P&G

November is Financial Literacy Month and on November 4, 2014, Gail Vaz-Oxlade, a woman that has made it her mission to educate Canadians on Financial Literacy, hosted the first ever Use Your Common Cents Day. The event was designed to empower Canadians to use their common sense when it comes to everyday spending and save money as a result.

In the past, I had terrible financial skills and ended up in a lot of debt as a result. It took years of careful money management and credit rebuilding to recover from my initial foolishness, but as a result I am now very passionate about the importance of financial literacy. And I’m also living proof that anyone can bounce back from previous bad money choices and build a better future.

  1. My money saving tip is know your prices for the things you buy often. If you know the best place to pick up those items at the best price you’re already saving yourself from over paying for those items. And watch for sales. Sometimes an item on sale at a more expensive store (eg. metro) is still more expensive than the regular price at a different store (eg. freshco) Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it’s the best option or price.

  2. Never go shopping hungry,I find this helps curb expensive impulse buying at the grocery store.Take the few extra minutes before hand to get organized.Make your list(s),check and clip coupons,I find it handy to circle the items I want in a flyer with black sharpie and the # I want to buy.Use the free apps that are available to get more deals and cash back.DON’T forget your list at home lol!!

  3. Plan your meals around your grocery store’s flyer’s, do price match for sale items and only use coupons on items you would regularly buy or if using the coupon makes the item free or almost free.
